I suggest that we move the "Nearest Airport" feature to a button of it's own. It's cool, but it's current front-page status would be more appropriate for a feature that would be used virtually every time the app was run. Once it was on its own page, we've have plenty of space to display distances & headings to the nearest public & nonpublic airports and other cool stuff.
Secondly, having "Location" inside a "Nearest Airport" group is confusing - it looks like the location of the nearest airport, not the present location.
I think the main menu should have a "Nearest" button that opens a new scene.
The new scene should have:
+Current Location+
Lat: XX.XXX Lon: XX.XXX
Elevation: XXXX ft
Time: 0000Z
+Nearest Public Airport+
Name: ABCD
ID: XYZ
Lat: XX.XXX Lon: XX.XXX
Distance: XX.X nm
Bearing: XXX
[Driving Directions]
+Nearest Nonpublic Airport+
Name: ABCD
ID: XYZ
Lat: XX.XXX Lon: XX.XXX
Distance: XX.X nm
Bearing: XXX
[Driving Directions]
I have a suggestion for further improvements to this feature.
First, change the button on the home page to say "Airport Search"
Second, on the separate scene with the nearest airport information, remove the "public only" toggle switch. Instead, add a section at the bottom with a button that says "Advanced Search."
The Advanced Search button would go to another screen with various options, including:
- Toggle switch for public only or public/private
- Drop down box for tower only, uncontrolled only, or either
- Toggle switch to include only airports with TAFs available
- Toggle switch to include only airports with 24 hr FBO
- Option to search from "My current location" or
- Option to choose number of search results (5, 10, 25)
Results would be sorted by distance, with distance and bearing stated on the results list. Tapping on the result would open another page that would display info for that airport, have a "driving directions" link, a link to AirNav data for that airport, and a link to "Check weather for XXX" (jumps to "choose a weather product" scene with airport code prefilled).
I realize this is a lot of work, but could make the "nearest airport" feature even more useful!
