A little reminder as I just spent a happy few hours on this one & pptp is complex enough without adding one's own lack of memory to the mix
Ping to LAN from VPN needs a route setting back to the VPN from any LAN hosts you need to ping from, otherwise silence.
In other words, once you think you've got the PPTP/PPP options to your liking, go to a host you need to talk to from the VPN and add the route and gateway for that host to reply back to the VPN segment.
