The db structure requires that there be a mother and father
in order to display the children of a union. Just define the
missing spouse/partner as "unknown husband", "unknown wife"
or something like that in order to display the children. I know
this prob. wasn't the solution you were looking for, but
currently it's the only feasible solution.
