I am trying to follow through chapter 2 and I am not able to build bash with the --enable-static-link option. I have seen a duplicate of this issue on the linuxquestions forum.

Anyone got any idea how to get this to work?

I'm not sure exactly what causes this.  It seems to happen on some distros and not others.  As a work around you can get a precompiled version of BASH-2.05a at: http://www.happy-monkey.net/architect/bin-pkgs/

This problem happens to me too.  Basically the issue is duplicates of malloc etc. from both C lib and Bash itself during linking stage.

Can be solved with --without-bash-malloc option to ./configure.

      --without-bash-malloc worked

      --without-bash-malloc
This also worked for me too (host is Ubuntu 6.10).  You may want to add this tip in the next version of the guide.
