    Preferences-->Protection.

Check "Backup notes before saving" and chose desired backup depth.

I am sorry. When I right click on the icon in my task bar and choose
preferences (by the way the same box comes up when I choose preferences from
within the program) I do not see protection. Could you please be a bit more
specific? Is there a specific file or files that the data is saved in?

I used the installer and installed the program on my computer. If I wanted to
copy the notes and program to a flash drive, how would I do that? Could I just
copy the entire folder that I find in Program files?

About the backup - I thought that you use alpha release 5.5, but if you are
with the current stable (5.0.112) - there is no such option. You should wait
for new release or try the alpha (see posts on "Open Discussion" forum)

About the folder - you can put it everywhere (PNotes folder include all
subfolders). Installer has been added just as "nice to have".

I'm using the 6.0.112 version, there is no problem finding
preferences>protection>backup the notes before saving, but it does not work.
I've made a full copy of the Pnotes files to an external HD, because I was
going to make a clean W7 installation. When I sent back the files to the new
HD i've lost more than 50% of the notes. Where the notes are usually saved?

Backing up is intended for storing copy of note before you save any change
made to it, NOT for backing up all notes.
Notes are usually saved in "data" subfolder in "PNotes" folder.
In order to save your notes between huge changes (reinstalling OS for example)
you should just copy your "data" folder elsewhere and then copy it back.
