I do not understand what on http://plplot.sourceforge.net/docbook-manual/plplot-html-5.5.3/output-drivers.html#postscript-driver is meant with "text: Use Postscript text (0|1); default 1", but I guess it has something to do with the Times font issue. |

I like to generate several plots in Postscript format for inclusion in a LaTeX document. I have problems to produce predictable results, e.g. I like a constant character size, constant line width and an appropriate size of plots. E.g. in one case I have a single plot, in another case I have several plots in a stack (using plssub(1,n)). Of course more plots shall consume more space. But using the defaults PLplot tries to fits everything in a page with about 2:3 aspect ratio. In LaTeX I have to include them with different values for the "scale" option of \includegraphics, resulting in different line widths. I am working on improving/extending the wxwidgets port of German Carrere (wxPlot) and making it a wxwidget. Freetype support and resizing are working at the moment. However, I have problems using the zooming functionality (plsdiplz and/or plsdiplt) and I a= m not able to find a good example of how those functions should be used. If I do something like: diplz(.2,.8,.2,.8); replot(); I end up having a blank plot (is a manual redraw necessary??) Could someone help me with how to use the zooming functionality? Hello, I am working on extending the wxPlot binding to PLPlot in order to make a general plotting widget usable in wxwidgets. After some work I got the freetype support and resizing to work smoothly (no flicker etc.) However, I cannot figure out how to use the zooming functionality. According to the documentation I came up with plsdiplz and/or plsdiplt. But how should those functions be used? For example executing diplz(.2,.8,.2,.8) followed by a replot() gives me an empty screen and I cannot find an examplle that does something like that (zoom in on a selected region of the current plot). Any help or tip is greatly appreciated! Sjaak |

I went into my installed plplot examples in /usr/local/share/plplot5.3.1/examples/f77 and copied the Makefile there to my home directory for inspection. Yes, it is much simpler than the one in the original directory. This should be what I need to get the job done. The plplot examples all work, so this will also be a good prototype for my own makefiles. Joe |

The example makefile is so obfuscated by substitutions that decoding is all but impossible. My example (in my original post) was a feeble attempt at understanding after studying the very same makefile that I think you suggested. Sorry, I've been using Fortran for over 40 years, but have used the make utility (off and on) for only for the last 10 years or so. Could someone please suggest a simple command line compilation of something like x06f.f? Would defining some environment variables help? Sorry to be such a dunce. Joe |

As a new user of plplot, I want to try a simple command line compile of one of the examples. Examination of Chapter 21 of the manual says that this section needs work. I'm using a Mac with OS X 10.3.9, but, being a bash shell, this should be similar to Linux. The only significant difference between what you did and my attempt is the -z3 is in one of my cvs accesses and not in the other. Different server, maybe? I copied this approach from the "Project: PLplot: CVS" page on the PLplot website. Maybe the wording there needs some modification so that all lines have the -z3. In any event, after reading that I need to update automake, autoconf, and libtool, I've decided to stay with plplot-5.3.1 for a while. With some experimentation I found that if I run 5.3.1 with X11, I can get all the options that I need for now. The only difference is that the newer version of PLplot allows the use of AquaTerm without starting X11, and .eps or .pdf files of any graphics window can be easily made. I also personally prefer the look of AquaTerm graphics to those of X11. Thanks to all. Joe |

Alan, Nevermind. My autoconf is version 2.57 (not 2.59+) and my automake is 1.6.3 (not 1.8.5+). Too many builds/installs are required and I'll be out of sync with the rest of the Mac world if I try to build from CVS. I'll just wait for the next version of plplot, or, if I get in an emergency, I'll disable octave to build. Thanks. At least now I know the problem. No further responses necessary. Hi Albert, I think your problem is that you don't need the & in C++. Unlike C, C++ has the idea of passing variables by reference. In the header file the definition of gvpd is void gvpd( PLFLT& xmin, PLFLT& xmax, PLFLT& ymin, PLFLT& ymax ); which means that we want to pass xmin, xmax etc by reference. This means that changes made to them in gvpd are passed back to the calling program. To call the routine you only need do something like PLFLT x0, x1, y0, y1; pls.gvpd( x0, x1, y0, y1 ); This is equivalent to the C way of doing things, where you pass a pointer to the variable, but it is neater. Let me know if this doesn't work. The only other thing I can think of is some conflict of versions. gvpd was only added to the C++ bindings relatively recently. It had been overlooked in the initial conversion. If gvpw works but gvpd does not then perhaps you are using an old version of plstream.h? Hope this helps. Andrew |
