I suspect this is a memory management problem for the particular pattern of plplot calls that you are using. Does the same error occur for the postscript device? If so, then it is probably an error in the core of plplot that we might be able to reproduce for the Java/Linux platform. If you cannot reproduce the error for the postscript device, then it is probably a memory management error in the special interactive device you use on the windows platform, and you (or Arjen) might be able to reproduce it in C for the windows platform thus substantially simplifying debugging efforts. We need java code from you that generates this error. That way, Arjen can attempt to reproduce your error on the windows platform, and if the error occurs for the postscript device, we should be able to reproduce it for the Linux platform as well (and also help to debug it with valgrind). Please make the requested example code as simple as possible, say ~10 plplot calls or less (while still reproducing the error for your platform). Alan __________________________ Alan W. Hi, I was wondering if anybody has considered implementing plplot apis into java (java2d or 3d). I am ready to dedicate some of my time for this. My C programming is very rusty. I need help from somebody who is very familiar with the plplot architecture and code. Please comment. Regards, -Ali |

Hi, A recent update of the hdf5 package in fink fixed the problems I had when building plplot with octave. Thanks Jeff. The package now builds fine again on Mac OS X. I have not yet tested the examples of the recent snapshot, though. - Koen. |

I am running gentoo with perl and plplot installed. $ perl -v This is perl, v5.8.4 built for i686-linux $plplot-config --version 5.3.1 However, I can't get PDL to install through either Gentoo's emerge or cpan install. The bothersome thing is that I had plplot and PDL working about a week and ahlaf ago, but I tried to install PDL with Slatec and I haven't been able to get it to work since. Here is the end of the install log. Any help would be great. Thanks. Regarding Jeff's suggestion, there is no lhdf5 used in plplot (unless I missed it). So I suspect that the error is not plplot related, but hdf5 and/or octave, both of which were recently updated in fink. - Koen. |

Hi alan, Actually, 2.1.57 is available through fink, see the right most column on the link you posted. I already got a reply from Jeff, and he thought it could be related to a new upstream version of hdf5 which uses the szip library. He also suggested to add -lsz after the -lhdf5 as a possible fix. I haven't had a change to try it out yet. - Koen. |

I wil look into this further and discuss it on the fink mailinglist. When > I know more I will let you know. > Thanks, Koen. Looking at your error report again, I have noticed all the problems concern the octave interface. Just to remind you, for most language interfaces to our PLplot library we let libtool figure out how to do the linking, but octave is a special case where we use mkoctfile to do this job and it seems quite possible to me that on the Mac OS X platform mkoctfile has not yet been updated to be consistent with the new Mac OS X development tool versions that are now installed on your system. In fact, looking at http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/octave it appears the fink version of octave is out of date; it is version 2.1.53 while the recommended version for a number of months now has been 2.1.57, and in fact our high-level octave interface won't work (at least for the most recent cvs snapshot tarball) unless you have version 2.1.57 or higher installed. (See the thread on plplot-devel that we have today). Once you get access to an up-to-date version of octave, the build problem might go away as well. You might want to write the fink package maintainer, Jeff Whitaker, to see when he is going to update to 2.1.57. Until he does that, you might as well simply disable octave (see below) for Mac OS X. Apple released new dev tools (including an updated gcc) a while ago, and there have been reports on the fink list that compilation of some programs are effected by it. I wil look into this further and discuss it on the fink mailinglist. When I know more I will let you know. - Koen. |

Could you please go back to a PLplot version that you have tried successfully before (5.3.1 or a later cvs snapshot if you tried one of those) to see whether you can still build that old version successfully? That will help us pin down whether it is a PLplot change or a change of your Mac OS X system that is the source of the current problem. Alan __________________________ Alan W. Yesterday, Rafael generated a snapshot of our CVS version of PLplot and put it in the usual place, http://plplot.sourceforge.net/cvs-tarball/ . I have done some testing (build, install, and build and execution of all installed examples) of this tarball on my Linux Debian testing distribution, and there were no obvious problems. I encourage PLplot users to give this experimental tarball a try. Your feedback about your normal use of this tarball will provide us with useful tests for a large variety of different platforms that are not accessible to the developers and will make our next official release that much better. Hi, Thanks for your response. > - preserve aspect ratio when zooming. It may take some getting used to, but for me it's the only way to go now. That is not possible, unfortunately. For my application I often need to plot the whole or a very big part of the y-axis against a little part of the x-axis, because the relevant information can only be seen this way. > - take control of the zooming process. There are now hooks in the CVS HEAD version of plwidget.tcl for the user to set a zoom handler. Of course this means you'll be responsible for replotting the data yourself, but the cool thing is that you can then drop all sorts of stuff "on top" of the zoomed data, like scales, labels, etc. Also gets around precision problems that appear when zooming to fine scales, due to the 16-bit driver data representation. That would be better... I was thinking about writing such a kind of user zoom handler as well, but when there is already one to use/test/patch, even better. How can I use the plwidget.tcl, is it possible to copy just this file from the CVS HEAD into my plplotter5.3.1 extension directory in Tcl/lib? Until now I was using plframe in a self defined Itk widget for all plotting tasks, but it seems that this is not the right way? Eckhard |

While I haven't used "the plplotter Tcl/Tk extension on windows", I have plenty of experience with Tcl/TK & zooming under *ix. So my suggestions would be, in order of ease: - preserve aspect ratio when zooming. It may take some getting used to, but for me it's the only way to go now. -- Maurice LeBrun mj...@ga... |

Hi, I am using the plplotter Tcl/Tk extension on windows. In the application I write, the user should be able to zoom an xy plot of data. This works so far, but I need to label some points in the plot. So I do that with plptex..., maybe adjust the character size via plschr before. I cannot preserve the aspect ratio during the zoom operation. The problem is now, that whenever the user zooms some part of the plot, the labels get zoomed as well - and look abolutely warped. This comes to a stage where they are totally useless. Is there a way to keep particular items - such as text labels - at original size or resize them different from the rest of the plot? If not - is it a big change to get this working? (When it isn't, I could do it maybe...). Thanks in advance -=20 Eckhard |

Perhaps the data have something strange about them? Very large values perhaps? (As internally the float coordinates are translated to integer pixel coordinates, you could be suffering from integer overflows) (If you want to send a single picture related to the problem at hand :), I guess it will not be considered rude) Regards, Arjen |

Hi thanks for the reply I wasn't that explicit because I wasn't sure if the list was alive :). Here is little piece of my code. PMap(i,j).getDensity() is an angle (polarization angle). Hi, I'm looking for a bit of help. I'm plotting a graph with two series using plpoin. I'd like to add a legend to the graph (it's not entirely obvious which series is which). The first thing I thought of using was plmtex. But I can't see how to get the relevant plpoin symbols drawn without resorting to setting explicit mapping between them and their ascii equivalents (some of the later ones don't even have equivalents)? Any help would be appreciated. Richard |

Is there any way to create and/or delete plots dynamically? The applicaton I am writing needs to react to some external process, and can go from 4 to 12 plots. Ideally I would like the base window to resize accordingly. Thanks, Joe |

Hi, PLplot 5.3.1 is now available through fink on Mac OS X. Compared to version 5.3.0, octave is now also supported, so expect some additional packages to be installed as well. If you experience any difficulties installing it, please report it to me and/or here and/or the fink mailing list. enjoy, - Koen. |
