Some changes to enhance the coherence of this XML source.  This is needed
for the upcoming Perl PLplot bindings, for which this file will be parsed.

The changes are quite minor: <variablelist> were added to sections plcol,
plgyax, plgzax, plsyax, and plszax.  In plstripc, "char* legline[]" was
changed to "char** legline".

Slightly changed the makefile generator. A new option was added called "make
copy" that has a smaller footprint than the existing "make links". "Make
links" is still there though. Also modifed "misc.in" so that "make clean"
works better (did I say *better* ? I mean *works*). Modifed the "readme"
file to document the new install option (make copy).

Implemented Andrew Roach's idea of caching plD_polyline commands for
consecutive connected (same color and width) line draw request and
creating bigger canvas polyline objects.  This reduced by 75% the
rendering time for the x01c demo (the main culprits were the text
characters and the axes; those latter used to produce more than 500
objects per axis!)

I think I am really done with the "simple" things that I can do as
regards the performance.  The Gnome driver is only 3 times slower than
the xwin driver and I think that this is acceptable.

I fixed several other bugs also, too many to document here.  Since I
am still experimenting with some different ideas, the code became
uglier than it has never been.  Please, do not hack it until I clean
it up.

allow a smooth boundary to be drawn when exclusions are specified for the
plshade routines, instead of the jagged boundary we currently have in demo
c16c.c.

The API of plshade has been changed, in particular the new type of the
"defined" parameter, which is now:

    PLINT (*defined) (PLFLT, PLFLT)
    
instead of:
    
    char *defined

This breaks the C++ bindings, besides causing a potential breakage of old
user code.  Furthermore, I disabled the other exclusion mechanism, based on
the values of sh_min and sh_max.  This also can have some undesirable
effects for the users.

This changes will be sitting in this branch until either Maurice or me will
have time to get back to the breakage issues.
