I just checked and RH7.3 and 8.0 use octave 2.1, but Debian woody does not. Although that is my distribution, I don't care since supporting old versions is often more trouble than it is worth. If we decide not to support octave 2.0, then we should put in a configuration test for octave version. I would wait to see what Joao says before you make these changes. He may have changed his mind by now about supporting 2.0, and I certainly don't mind if we insist on 2.1 by the appropriate octave version test in our configuration.
