Hmm, the colleague who tried it just promised that he didn't run 'make
check', he just did 'make install' as root. After he changed --prefix=
to somewhere else it seems to work now!

... which is what I did: 

  robert@ganymed:~/tmp/plplot-5.2.0> ./configure --enable-xwin --enable-ps --enable-xterm --enable-pnm

I forgot to mention that I try this with plplot-5.2.0.
