I cannot replicate the bug here.  I did exactly what you suggested: fresh
cvs checkout in a empty dir, ./bootstrap.sh, make, and make install (haveing
rm -rf the install destination before).  All x??c.c examples compile and
work perfectly.

I am puzzled.
