I finally figured out how to change the version number (and commented about my findings in configure.ac) so ignore my prior questions about this, Rafael. For now, I decided to change to 5.2.0 for both the package version and the version numbers for our various libraries in anticipation of the forthcoming release. In order to use the new versions, you must either make a clean checkout from CVS or else do a 'make distclean' before running bootstrap.sh etc. If we ever get serious about keeping track of binary compatibility issues for our several libraries, and only updating the library version when appropriate, then we will have to look at the version for each of our libraries on a case-by-case basis. Until somebody wants to take on that responsibility, setting all our library versions to the package version number is easier even though this goes directly contrary to the advice/advocacy on library versioning that you can find using 'info libtool'.
