Too bad.

Well, we may be in the middle of a struggle between users who want to keep
old functionality, and the autoconf guys who want to strongly deprecate that
functionality to encourage users to use different functionality which the
autoconf guys feel is superior.  So post-release, it may be worth asking on
the autoconf list (assuming such a mailing list exists) the preferred way to
do what you want.  Meanwhile, we can live with the warning messages.
