Vince has tried a number of possibilities with the new configuration scheme. Everything compiles okay, but it just will not build shared libraries on cygwin. The loader there keeps giving the error message "undefined reference to `_WinMain@16'." If you google for libtool cygwin WinMain you get a huge number of hits showing this is a common problem for many autotools configured Unix packages that are being ported to cygwin. Also, the autobook chapter devoted to cygwin makes it clear both cygwin and libtool are in a great state of flux trying to meet each others shared object needs so it is not clear there will be an easy solution to this common problem until both packages settle down. Thanks very much, Vince, for giving this interesting possibility a good try - a brave attempt that failed at this time but which is likely to succeed in the future since so many are clamoring for solutions.
