So far so good.  The RH-7.1 file differences for png and jpeg turned out to
be mostly due to the width change that Andrew enabled for libgd >=2.0. (I
had forgotten about that). Since RH7.1 has a 1.8.x version it doesn't
generate thickened lines like my Debian version.  There were also some
subtle differences that could be seen by eye when comparing the small subset
of plots that were different (exactly the same subset of examples generated
differences for jpeg and png).  However, these subtle differences are again
probably due to different library versions. Anyhow, they are so subtle I am
not going to worry about them.

So RedHat 7.1 seems good, and it is now on to solaris.
