Hi Alan,
 I think that it is a very good idea.
I think that keeping the right index ordering is important,
 may be not for performances which are dominated by the transfer rate
 between client and X11 server , but certainly to make programming
easier. It is better to stick to one convention instead of
having  to remember which is which at each step.
Sorry, I did not realise this point previously , but thank you very much 
if you want to correct this error
