The dummy packages are for the situation where you have to satisfy Debian dependencies, but you have installed Java completely independently. But it appears there is no need t= o do that; there are real Debian packages for the java implementation from kaffe, IBM, and Blackdown. I will probably try them in that order since kaffe is a clean-room GPLed version and thus completely out of the control of Sun, and I feel the IBM version has a better chance than the Blackdown version of surviving the idiotic Sun policies for Java. It's amazing to me that (a) Sun is treating the Blackdown volunteers in such a shabby manner since, after all, Blackdown's Linux porting efforts have substantially increased the number o= f Java users, and (b) that any Blackdown volunteers are left after that shabb= y treatment. I well remember the first Sun Java for Linux announcement that made no mention of the years of hard effort put into the product by Blackdown volunteers (and which Sun could grab off without credit to Blackdown because of the Java license). Also, from the Blackdown web site, Sun still apparently does all sorts of control freak stuff about giving Blackdown developers needed information in a timely manner, and I wouldn't put up with such nonsense for a minute. > You may try : > > http://people.debian.org/=F5pal/java/policy.html > > > [...] the first thing I will try is to install the dummy java Debian > > packages, and see what the documentation of them says for making Debian > > work with the Blackdown version of the JDK. > > Look at the archives of the debian-java mailing list > (http://lists.debian.org/devel.html).
