Since Rafael's zdefined malloc change, this demo was not working unless
nx=ny.  I fixed this bug and also did some cleanup of zdefined after use. (I
realize all this stuff goes when Rafael's nifty exclusion patch gets into
head, but meanwhile, I want the demo to work.)
