I should have also mentioned that the build script does the following inside the git repository:

# For rebuilds *using a separate build tree*, "git status" reveals
# ninja has a build bug where re2c modifies src/lexer.cc in the source
# tree.  So remove this source-code change so you are guaranteed to start
# with a completely fresh source tree:
git checkout -- src/lexer.cc

Which works around a ninja source-tree contamination bug that needs fixing.
