Alan, Nevermind. My autoconf is version 2.57 (not 2.59+) and my automake is 1.6.3 (not 1.8.5+). Too many builds/installs are required and I'll be out of sync with the rest of the Mac world if I try to build from CVS. I'll just wait for the next version of plplot, or, if I get in an emergency, I'll disable octave to build. Thanks. At least now I know the problem. No further responses necessary.
