Many thanks for your prompt reply to my question and willingness to help.

We now seem to have solved the problem: we had switched from a
single-precision installation to double-precision and somehow one of the
include files was left with the wrong setting of the double flag. We have
remedied this and it now works.

PS. Good to see another astronomer out there. I remember a couple of very
enjoyable visits to UVic and DAO when I was a postdoc at Laval (Quebec)
several years ago!
