In RH-8.0, if I remove the fonts, I get the same error:

cglobe.map  globe.map  plstnd5.fnt  plxtnd5.fnt  usaglobe.map  usa.map

(The fonts are the files with the extension .fnt, and I installed plplot=20
in ~/test)

> mv ~/test/lib/plplot5.2.0/data  ~/test/lib/plplot5.2.0/data-

> ./x01c -dev xwin
Plplot library version: 5.2.0

*** PLPLOT ERROR ***
Unable to open or allocate memory for font file
Program aborted

Thus the question is: you are trying to run an example without first=20
installing plplot right? You can't. You *have* to install before=20
running any example.
