Hazen, can you verify this problem with static builds
(-DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS=OFF) for Mac OS X?

I don't have access to that platform, but we need verification of this issue
for Mac OS X since static builds work fine on Linux. (I just tested that in
work leading up to our next release.)
