I've just installed plone and have been working on putting together a site for a week or so. I thought it might be helpful to post both the questions I've been able to answer (but where the answers weren't easily found in the plone book or other docs) - and the ones I haven't been able to answer. Any help on those would be appreciated; also feel free to expand on my answers or correct any misconceptions you find. Overall, a very impressive product! The more I begin to understand, the better I feel about it. Q. Folder with TOC. Some folders are just folders - ie, repositories for multiple pages or documents. Any way to set up their index page so that it just gives a link to each contained item, without having to edit the index_html page manually each time you add a new thing? PARTIAL ANSWER: If there is no index_html document, something like this gets done. But the text and formatting on page makes it look like a mistake. How would one customize the look of these default pages. Or is there an ZPT expression one can include inside a page that says, "put links to all contained pages here"? Q. What's the difference between Manager and Owner, etc? PARTIAL ANSWER: based on assigning local roles to a user and experimenting with what can be done. This is out-of-the-box behavior, I understand it can be customized (but I haven't seen a clear HowTo on customizing it): Manager: can change state pretty much arbitrarily, short-circuiting normal review process. can edit content, even if it is published. can assign "authenticated" or "manager" role to others Owner: can add, delete, edit, and submit items though normal workflow. can assign "authenticated" or "owner" role to others can't review & publish. can't edit without retracting first. Reviewer: can edit & submit items through normal workflow gets notifications of pending items, and can publish or reject them. can't add or delete items can't edit published items Member just viewing privileges, and adding comments. Authenticated ?? Anonymous a couple of restrictions compared to Member - not sure exactly what? Q. How DO you delete a member? Even after being deleted from acl_users and having their Members folder deleted, I still get the old member showing up in search (ie, when searching members in order to delegate local roles). ANSWER: Go to Zope Management Interface, click on the plone directory. Click acl_users and delete user(s). Back out to plone directory. Click on portal_memberdata, click "Contents" tab, click "Prune" button (once per member needing pruning). Q. Any easy way to restrict viewing a folder & its contents to members only, or a specific set of members? Q. Any way to require authorization from an admin in order for a new member to join? Q. Why can't I publish documents in my own home folder without someone else's say-so? PARTIAL ANSWER: this appears to be just default policy -- nothing can be posted without permission of a Reviewer or Manager. Normally just Owner is granted on home directory. Need to investigate CMF to determine how to change this policy for home pages, if that is desired. Or, give everyone local role of Reviewer or Manager on own home directory - how to do this by default? Q. I'd like to have certain people's birthdays on the calendar. Which leads to a couple of questions: - how to add to the list of "Event Types" - can an event be designated to repeat every year? - any way to remove the 00:00:00 - 00:00:00 from the display in the calendar? - ultimately, how would one go about adding birthday as a user-profile item, and get the above behaviors? Q. Where to put favicon.ico so that it will show up? ANSWER: Using ZMI, put it in <plone dir>/portal_skins/custom Q. Can the mailing list archives be searched?
