The implications of shader technology are really serious for scene graph API's and I'm doubtful that a piecemeal approach is going to cut it. It's tempting to make a clean break and make a version 2...but right now, we are in that annoying transition period for a new technology where not everyone has shader-capable boards yet. I don't see a way for applications to easily work both with and without shaders. I'm not inclined to try to build something that extends SSG to cover lots of existing 'standard pipeline' extensions if that approach is going to be obsolete in a year or so.
