Some changes related to mouse handling (and bugs in SDL in that respect) are in the works. Dennis wrote: > Term: Error loading Lua file resources/defaults.lua:223: malformed > number near > `0.001' Aha! Found the problem! It seems that Lua takes into account the current locale when interpreting literal numbers in scripts, and so it fails if you're using a locale that uses a comma as the decimal point. Stupid. This is fixed in Subversion. I also added better error reporting, so that future bugs of this type should be easier to find, without users having to compile from source and run Pipmak in a debugger. As a workaround for people who neither want to compile from SVN nor wait for the next release, you can get Pipmak to run by setting the LC_NUMERIC environment variable to "C" ('export LC_NUMERIC=C' in bash) beforehand. Thanks for the help, Dennis! -Christian |

Yes, that's helpful. The line numbers and the arguments give me some clues. (I didn't have those in Stefan's report because he used the release binary that doesn't include debug info.) I still can't reproduce it, but I have a somewhat better idea of what's going on. Christian, I'd like to know have you installed OS Linux on your computer? How did you compile binary? Did you test it yourself? Well, I have the last version 0.0.8 and I deleted the line 'Requires: <at> requirements <at> ' and compiled Pipmak's binary. And when I run it, I have the same error with SDL. Then I compiled it with debug info. What I must do next? |

Dennis wrote: >> Hmm, too bad. Would be nice if you could help me debug that. > I would be glad to do that. But how? By running Pipmak in a debugger (gdb), we can find out where exactly (and hopefully why) it crashes. That is, if the self-compiled version does crash too. To compile Pipmak with debug info, replace the '-O2' in the CFLAGS line at the top of the Makefile by '-g -O0'. > I still can't compile Pipmak from source: > Package '@requirements@', required by 'OpenAL', not found > What is the package? That sounds like the pkg-config file for OpenAL is screwed up. Try installing the latest OpenAL package. If that doesn't help, have a look at the openal.pc file that's probably somewhere like /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ ('locate openal.pc' should point you to it). As a quick and dirty hack, I suppose you could just delete the line that presumably reads 'Requires: @requirements@'. And do report this to the maintainer of the OpenAL package. -Christian |

Troubles in Linux I have the same problem like Stefan When I try to run Linux binary Pipmak falls with error: Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed) When I try to compile it from source I get error that the utility xcodebuild was not found. What is the utility? I have OpenSuSE 10.0 with gcc 4.0.2 and the next SDL packages: SDL_ttf-2.0.6-222 SDL_perl-1.20.0-358 SDL_image-1.2.4-2 SDL-devel-1.2.8-8 SDL_mixer-1.2.6-3 SDL_gfx-2.0.13-1 SDL-1.2.8-8 SDL_net-1.2.5-223 SDL_gfx-devel-2.0.13-1 |

I think Pipmak is very good engine for making adventure games. It is very cool that it is crossplatform. But I'd like to know will be possible in future to create classic point'n'click 3rd-person games like Syberia or not? Was Pipmak planned only for games like Myst? |

Wow!! Nice work, Christian and Martin! I like very much the site new look!! Just a thing: I think that the version number 0.x.x doesn't make honor to Pipmak: it's more than a preliminary or alpha version!! No problem on the Showcase page for me, I have only to change my download page to prevent the browser error that you have describe to me. Ciao Andrea |

Hi Andrea I finally found some time to look at your reconstruction of your house. It is really beautiful! Thank you very much for this. I think there are two things missing: First, make an exterior that can be seen through the windows. Second, it would be great if one could open and close doors, drawers and so on. But I guess both of them take much time to realize ... You wrote: > I'm a fans of Myst's saga and when I will have a little more > time that now, I would like to make my own 3d adventure. I saw it in the reconstruction of your house in the pyramid. The red room really creates a known feeling. Myst (and also its sequels) is the best game I ever played. Greetings Urs |

The Pipmak web site (http://pipmak.sourceforge.net/) has just received a slight visual touch-up and a complete internal redesign of the PHP and CSS code. In the course of this, I also added the "Showcase" page that I've been talking about for a while. Andrea and Urs, if you disagree with how I describe your projects there, let me know. Also, if anyone finds any errors (except some minor rendering glitches on Windows IE that I was tired of trying to work around), please report. -Christian |

Stefan Gro=DFhauser wrote: > Voil=E0, a pretty and useless but cute script: > http://abi.netheadserver.de/downloads/zuendappundergroundV0_1.zip Neat! Funny idea, and carried out very well! One small bug I found: When you compute -1 * 0 and then concatenate the=20 result to a string, it comes out as "-0" here on Mac OS X. This causes=20 the script to look for the image "zuendapp_l-0.png", which doesn't exist = (the correct image would be "zuendapp_l0.png"). The floating point=20 numbers used by Lua indeed have distinct negative and positive zeros,=20 and apparently the string conversion of negative zero is not consistent=20 across platforms. You can fix this by using roller:setimage("zuendapp_"..(delta_alpha < 0 and "l" or=20 "r")..string.format("%d", (delta_alpha < 0 and -1 or=20 1)*(math.floor(alpha/(math.pi/13))*15-90))..".png") instead of roller:setimage("zuendapp_"..(delta_alpha < 0 and "l" or=20 "r")..(delta_alpha < 0 and -1 or=20 1)*(math.floor(alpha/(math.pi/13))*15-90)..".png") > Maybe it'll be inside a tiny adventure (a friend of mine owns a Z=FCnda= pp > and adores it). Keep us posted about your progress, so that I can add it to the=20 "Showcase" page that is currently in the works once it's ready (if you=20 permit)! > Its in a very early stage of developement now, but I think you would > like to see people using pipmak :-D ... Sure, and it's particularly nice to see people do something different=20 than panoramic landscapes! :) > This is a Win32 package that includes pipmak... By the way, for the final release, feel free to rename the Pipmak=20 executable to the name of your game and condemn its readme files (you=20 should keep COPYING and Acknowledgements, on the rest I don't insist) to = some subfolder. That might even make it clearer that they apply to the=20 engine, not to your game content. -Christian |

Hey Andrea, Wow! Thanks for the compliments. A free modeling app that I used for a while was Wings3d @ www.wings3D.com. I've seen some great stuff modeled from the app if you know how to use it. I personally use LightWave. While a lot of stuff is coming from Maya and Max nowadays, a lot of stuff is actually modeled in LightWave and then pulled into those apps. BTW, your English is really quite good. I don't think I misunderstood any part of what you wrote. Keep up the modeling and you'll be able to model stuff really quickly after a while! What used to take me a month to do I can now do in about two days. I'm ambivalent about it - on the one hand, it's a useful alternative way of panning (especially for people who are not familiar or comfortable with QuickTime VR's drag-to-pan behavior after which Pipmak's "joystick mouse mode" was modeled). On the other hand, it can be a bit disturbing if the view always rotates when the mouse is outside of the window (of course this is no problem in fullscreen mode). I once thought about adding a feature of this kind to Pipmak itself, but couldn't decide if it was a good thing or not. > About screen resolution, do you think it's difficult make a function > pipmak.setscreensize? I think you must get all possible resolution > from the graphic card and put in an array, and after choose one of those. Yes, that's actually planned (after people consistently try to use the resolution-switching feature of pipmak.setfullscreen() in unintended ways :) ). Item 5 on the To Do list <http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/pipmak/trunk/pipmak/To%20Do.txt?revision=110>. I just never got around to implementing it so far. > I have noticed that in fullscreen modes, the panorama seems stretched > on vertical direction That must be a bug. Can you send me a screenshot that shows it? (Unless your fullscreen modes have non-square pixels, in which case there's nothing I can do about it - I don't think it's possible to query for the pixel aspect ratio.) > I tried the pipmak_internal.tool, but i could get only black color... Black? That's weird. It should be transparent for no hotspot, red for hotspot 1, green for hotspot 2, etc. - the colors from <http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pipmak/trunk/pipmak/extras/hotspot-palette.gif?view=markup>. If it always paints black, regardless of what color you pick up with the eyedropper, that's a bug. -Christian |

I give you one little hint: Go on like this. Never put advertising banners on your webpage. > So, I just put only html, js or php file on the server > and my space is only 100MB. That's all! OK, there are still some tricks left you could try. To be exact, there are three that come to my mind right now: 1. You can put .php-files on the server that are then executed by it? Unfortunately I do not know php. But I imagine, that a php-application can tell the server the content-type of the content it generates. This isn't better as my solution 3, because then you would have to use the ending .php. But knowing apache, you can safely add "/my.pipmak" to the URL of a php-file. (Do you know php a little? If yes, we could work out this solution if you are interested and have the time. (Ignoring my own time shortage.)) 2. You can try to tell the server the content-type of your file with a .var-file. .var-files are usually used by content-negotiation. This sounds complicated and it is complicated. But the solution would be rather simple. Let's say your pipmak-projectfile is my.pipmak. Now add a file with the name my.pipmak.var or my.var (you have to try both, I don't know which is more likely to work) with the following two lines: URI: my.pipmak Content-type: application/octet-stream I guess you have 2% chance that this works. 3. The third one is the simplest solution. It is also the one that works most likely. Simply put the ending .bin to your file. Apache should send such files as application/octet-stream by default. > About screen resolution, probably you are on right, mine it was just > an idea. Before you forget this idea, read what Christian has to say about this. Greetings Urs |
