Ok I am a C and ASM coder who is looking to do a couple things and am wondering if 1. anyone wants to join and 2. where to get the information. I am going to design something that will do the fallowing. Using all opensource tools. Design a system where a movie database can be made using pilot-db that can keep in sync multiple palm pilots as well as a online site that has the movies listed. My hopes is to eventually have a method where for example a movie can be added to the website using imdb information and then plug in a pilot and have it sync with the database on the pilot as well as other pilots between themselves. Also to have it where if a movie is added to a pilot all the pilots update as well as the website. Some of you already know that I have an extremely large movie collection somewhere around 600+ and this type of system is what is needed to keep me from going crazy when I go to a movie store as well as when friends as me what movies I have and want me to loan them one. I am hoping to also have this system be able to be used by both windows and linux people without much hassle. Any info/ideas would be awesome. |

There is no need for a script. Make a View that has the movie title in the first column, then write the Graffiti letter of the first letter you want and you will be taken there. You will have to decided whether this means changing The Matrix to Matrix beacuse of the numebr of movies beginning with The. Best wishes. While we are waiting for the new release if anyone wants to send the debug msg recompiled version to me it would be much appreciated. Awesome that works vwry nice. No more debug windows and it actually seems to work faster and more effortlessly. Now just to figure out how to make a script or something so that I can easily jump to the first movie that begins with an "a" or "b" or "c" etc to make navigating my large list easier. I have not had a linux machine to run ./configure on the source but is it just using normal gcc ? |

Perhaps you could start by privately sending me (na...@ve..., even if my return address appears different) a copy of your large database? I don't have any large databases to play with, so I'm not sure if the debug message is still enabled. I'll try it out with the CVS version that I'm presently working with, fix the debug message if it pops up, then send you a copy of the CVS executable to play with. And if you find any glaring bugs you can report them back to us :) Nathan Kurz na...@ve... (and if anyone else out there could compile from CVS that would be great) |

First let me say that I love your work. Currently I am using it to hold a mini database of my movie collection from my earlier mysql/web based movie database. Now I have over 600 movies and am only having a couple of fields per movie, but everytime I select my movie database on my palm (Zire if the model matters) it gives a debug window that has "Experimental Very Large Database Support.". Now I know my Database must seem large, but it seems to work just fine without problems and the debug window has become more of a frustration as it comes up also when I go between records in the same database. Is there a way to turn this off? If you need a test subject for Large databases. I would love to help out any way I can. Currently I lack a linux machine though so compiling on my end would be a bit tricky I fear. Anyways any info would be great. John |

The Palm was designed to be an extension of the PC, relying on it to do the heavy number-cruching stuff. Still, today's Palms have far bigger CPUs than the early models and you should be able to do everything on the Palm. I won't vouch for it being the best way to do it, though. Emmanuel |

Well, I've checked in some small changes to CVS that at least allow the code to compile and run. My testing so far has been pretty much limited to loading it in Pose, creating a simple database, and adding a couple of records. It didn't crash! But if anyone else could build it and try it out (perhaps even on a real Palm) that would be nice. Support for the new Microtime field is broken, but hopefully in a non-offensive way. Which brings up the question: Is adding Microtime support a useful feature, or should it be yanked (at least for now). The other main compile change is that you now need PalmOS sdk5r3. This was the only version 5 I could find on Palm's site, so I didn't have much choice in going to it. If we could get a least a couple testers, maybe we could make a little in-house alpha release out of it in a few days so as to find more bugs? --nate |

Trying again, I see that you click next to (but not on) the lower of the two "View" menu options... the one that doesn't do anything. Weird, but at least doable. It also seems to lack support for many of the database types supported by the Palm app, or have I missed those too? -TMcN- |

>>I've spent some time looking at DB-Editor and JPilot-DB. Trouble is, neither one supports useful record views (i.e. non-tabular), >> nor do they facilitate import/export. But to me, a strong desktop application is definitely the missing link. JPilot-DB has tabular AND form views just like the pilot-db app on the palm. JPilot-DB has support for XML imports, csv import (same as pilot-db, with .ifo files) and other import formats. The library itself is easy to use and you could easily write web front-ends and more import tools using the libraries. The desktop app isn't perfect, but the core library is pretty solid. The import/export tools are fairly solid too. It wouldn't take hardly any work to make them bulletproof. I myself would seriously look at using the jpilot-db libraries (and potentially expanding them) and perhaps rewrite the entire UI. Database merging is tricky, agreed. Many systems handle it by flagging data to be deleted, but that still causes trouble after a pack. Or by using modifcation and sync timestamps, but that is still somewhat limiting in that you can only safely sync a single remote. Palm's desktop software watches for changes and if it notices conflicting changes, the user must intervene, similar to a VCS. One question I have is, does it matter where that intelligence lays? It's a lot easier to code in standard C++ or Java than in the Palm-limited C/C++. -TMcN- |

With regard to mid-range goals for pilot-db, Emmanuel and I have exchanged a few emails about what sort of desktop apps would be useful in the relatively near future. I'd agree with his conclusion that the first thing we need is a library that allows for easy manipulation of pilot-db databases. I'd envision something parallel to libdb but that backends to a pilot-db database. This would be then used to build the scripts he refers to. I think the second thing that's needed is a good way to merge two PDBs. Emmanual probably has thought about this more than I have, but I think it could be done relatively simply if one simply tracks new, changed, and deleted records and doesn't do anything time based. In case of conflict, manual intervention would be required. This might limit the places it could be used, but would be a lot better than nothing and would meet many single-user / multiple-locations uses. Other input appreciated. --nate |

It appears that Scott Wallace put quite a bit of work into the CVS version before he left, but just didn't quite finish it. Presuming he's gone to show up again sometime (his website implies that he's off travelling after getting his Ph.D.) I'd rather not alienate him by throwing away all the things that he did manage to get working. I actually have a compileable and mostly working version of the CVS that I'm currently working on, but I'd like to understand the code a bit better before I start checking in changes. So, to avoid redoing his work, let's make starting with the current tarball the fallback plan if I can't get the CVS version working within a week. > Perhaps we should get a show-of-hands of developers willing to be > decently-active for the next two months and discuss this in greater depth. A great plan. > A) Short-term feature goals - things we can have done by, say, 14 March. > (Widescreen would probably not fit, considering the state of the current > code and my time commitments. But there are some bug fixes to the field > value copy code I want to put in, for example.) I intend to have support for SubDb's (links to multiple child records in a related database) by then. Secondarily (but already working in prototype) I intend to have automatic sorting associated with views, so that a view change can trigger a reordering. Currently it's possible with scripting, but it should be as simple as a checkbox. > B) Mid-term goals - where we'd like to go, put on the roadmap. Nobody's > committed, just ideas. > > C) Configuration options to deprecate (remove) > > D) Configuration options to fully integrate and test (no more option) > > E) Configuration options to leave as options I'm all for reducing the number of #ifdef's in the code that lead to branches that haven't been tested or updated in ages. I'd also like to add: F) Making sure bugs reported to the list are entered in the database: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=100621&group_id=621&func=browse G) Triage the current bug reports, determining which are irrelevant, which should be fixed eventually, and which should block a release. > Nathan, since you've taken on the mantel of "ring-leader" <grin>, might I > request CVS access also? (Look at sourceforge projects pictpage and > plkrdata for some of my other work.) You can request it, but I'm not yet in a position to grant it. So far, I've only taken over the mailing list, and don't (yet?) have ability to grant CVS access. But over the next few weeks we'll figure out a way that you and others can check things in. --nate |

I suggest we start at the tarball version, which does compile, tag it with a few minor fixes (like removing that debug warning for large database support, which I have removed and sent to others), re-release it, and then treat it like a real project. My primary interest was improved linking also (I'd like more than one lookup field per database) and wide-screen (Clie UX50) support. Was making good progress on the latter prior to the last week of January, at which point we got a puppy. Those take a LOT of time. I'd like to see less reliance on the configuration scripts. I use such things heavily; I code for Linux and BSD commercially currently, and these things are both essential and useful in those environments. But the gcc/Palm environment is less disparate and, in any event, never as fragmented as the current configuration script allows for. There's just way too much experimental code in there that is seldom or never used. >From a PDA-project perspective, the configuration scripts are a really dumb idea. Yes, I personally recompile many projects (and have several of my own OpenSource projects), but the typical user would be lost in CygWin, clueless about Make and gcc, and has never heard of a "resource." They download from PalmGear the one-and-only package of released executables. Perhaps we should get a show-of-hands of developers willing to be decently-active for the next two months and discuss this in greater depth. I would suggest the topics be: A) Short-term feature goals - things we can have done by, say, 14 March. (Widescreen would probably not fit, considering the state of the current code and my time commitments. But there are some bug fixes to the field value copy code I want to put in, for example.) B) Mid-term goals - where we'd like to go, put on the roadmap. Nobody's committed, just ideas. C) Configuration options to deprecate (remove) D) Configuration options to fully integrate and test (no more option) E) Configuration options to leave as options And then we could get a newer release out on PalmGear, PDAGreen, etc., put an announcement on FreshMeat and move forward with hopefully higher exposure generating more developer interest. Nathan, since you've taken on the mantel of "ring-leader" <grin>, might I request CVS access also? (Look at sourceforge projects pictpage and plkrdata for some of my other work.) |

With that in mind, and since the previous administrators haven't been seen in a while, I've just recently taken over administration of the mailing list. I've made a few configuration changes that should cut down on the spam and viruses. In particular, I've restricted postings to subscribers only, and restricted the maximum message size to 20K. Fingers-crossed, everything has been on topic since I made the change. If anyone continues to have problems with the list, or suggestions for improvements, please send them to me at nkurz at users.sourceforge.net. > But then again, if anybody has any ideas on tying a field from my > tickets database to the addressbook database, that'd also be great. Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about the current code, though. I'm hoping to learn a lot in the next month or so as I add better support for linked databases. Based on my skimming of the code, though, I think there is no current support for linking to the addressbook database. There is some commented out code that pertains to this, so obviously someone thought it a good idea in the past. So perhaps it can be resurrected... Codewise, my immediate goal is going to be to get a compileable version checked in to CVS. The current CVS version looks to have been uploaded in a hurry without testing. As a result, in addition to some good ideas and bug fixes, there are some half-finished parts that need to be weeded out or finished before the code has a chance of working. It's not hard, but is taking some time, so hopefully within the week. Nathan Kurz nk...@us... |

Greetings all, Welcome to the Pilot-DB list. I thought it was dead. I guess not. Okay, Let's see, Chessla, is it? Have you downloaded the appropriate version of Pilot-DB for your handheld? Maybe you should try the b&w version instead? Michael, I don't have any HandDBase Databases to try with my 1.10 on my m130. I *DID* have a little bit of problem installing it, but that was because I was using Palm Dekstop 4.01 and not 4.1 sp3. I subsequently installed 4.1 sp3 over 4.01 to install, then re-installed for palm outlook sync mail support. If you want to zap me one of the databases you're having trouble with, I can try on my end, however; I am not a developer. Zap it to my at dav...@ya... if you want me to try. Oh, what do I use it for? I am a computer tech guy, and use it for keeping track of my work calls (we have a dorky helpdesk database here, it's extremely proprietary, only runs on Micro$oft Windows, and my current level of access to it does NOT allow me to import anything into the database via pure automagical electronic or digital contriviances. It *DOES* however, export just my calls to a CSV file, and that it turn gets thrown into DB format. I also have my company's address book in Palm Contacts format, and currently I am working on some way to point one of the fields in the ticket database to my handheld palm contacts format database using the addressbook plugin, but haven't gotten it to work yet. The reason being, is that the palm contacts address book is more current and accurate than the contact information in my company's shoddy helpdesk database app. One last thing about this database, should the developers also actually be lurking in the mailling list. I have been experimenting with the filter application. My boss wants us to treat not only all priority 1 and priority 2 calls and top items that are to be reported on every morning, but also for certain individuals within our organization. I can create separate filters for all priority 1, all priority 2, and each individuals name. However, I would like to have just one filter, say, called the HotIssues filter, that sorts for any of these calls withing my whole ticket database. As of this writing, I have 1 priority one (parts on order, and on hold) and 1 priority two. Today I was planning on getting to finishing that one off. But then again, if anybody has any ideas on tying a field from my tickets database to the addressbook database, that'd also be great. Cheerio, Kyle Davis Rebel without a clue. -----Original Message----- From: pil...@li... [mailto:pil...@li...] On Behalf Of pil...@li... Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2004 11:49 PM To: pil...@li... I first tried version 1.1 which could not open the databases created with the db-tools (either one of them). I then downloaded version 1.0.4 which could open the files and manipulate them. At one point, I set the "rebuild records" option and tried replacing the 1.0.4 version with the 1.1.0 version. This would cause the Palm to reset whenever I attempted to open any of the databases. To Whom It May Concern, I have really enjoyed Pilot-DB, especially the Mobil-DB Plug-In. Another feature I appreciated was the ability to Enable High Resolution for my Sony Clie. I now have a Palm Tungsten T3. Is there a way to Enable High Resolution for this device in the Global Preferences/Display screen or is that something I will have to wait for in a future release? The Palm Tungsten T3 has a 320 X 480 resolution screen. Thanks in advance for any help. John |
