The SourceForge people have removed the anonymous ftp service from their offering. So it seems, I'll have to put test releases into the normal file release mechanism that SourceForge has. After I upload the next test release, I'll let you all know the new URL for it. |

Is version 0.3.2beta2 of the palm-db-tools incompatible with the current DB? The version of pilot-db that I've been using is dated March 24. The version that appears to be most recently released is from April. The problem report that I am getting I believe is someone using the April version. Is there a known incompatibility between databases able to be read by the April released DB and the March beta version? If so, where can I get a version of the utilities that the April version can read? -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. Note that the user reports downloading DB from the web site and it generates the same error as the copy I distribute. He also reports that if he uses an older version (which, as far as I am aware, was built using the same csv2pdb!) DB can read the data. He is using a Visor. I can send along a file in private email to someone interested in investigating. -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. I make a zip available containing DB and a set of databases relating to Pokemon trading cards, books, videos, episodes to tape, etc. Today I received an email from a user using a Mac and a Visor who reports "the db application lists the databases but when I try to use them I get an invalid file not a database error. I tried to load them into the palm developer desktop application but it doesn't like the =E8 character." Now, I'm using $ csv2pdb -v pdb2csv (palm-db-tools 0.3.2) as well as db version 0.3.1. Is there something I can do to check out this problem to see what might be going wrong? -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. Hi! I wondered if it is possible to sort a table by more than 1 field. Using v. 0.3.1, I can't figure it out. I dug through the mailing list and found the hint to press the "Add" button, but I cannot find this button. The same posting mentions the file ftp://pilot-db.sourceforge.net/pub/pilot-db/dbtest.prc. Today, this file seems to be called dbtest-en.prc, but I cannot download it - "permission denied" if I use an FTP client; if I use a browser, there comes up a different error message, but I cannot load the file either. Hi, I thought it might be useful to be have an options not to compile in JFile3 or MobileDB support in the same way as it is done with the legacy DB support at the moment. Included is a patch that should do this. The extra options are #defined in config.h. Turning off JFile3 and MobileDB support only reduces the .prc size by about 5K, so it isn't a great saving. I am currently working on adding better color support in DB. (Not that everything would be in color but just to do selections correctly and so on.) I ported the grid widget used in the list view so it does things in color. The grid widget is configurable but not all this configuration has been exposed to the user. Now that I have a color version of the grid widget which still operates on older systems, I'd like to expose some of the configurability. The test release currently up lets you hide the header row and also add a seperator line between the header and data area. Some more options that I can add with relative ease since the grid already supports them: - vertical column sepeators - change colors of any grid piece including normal row, highlighted row, and selected row (by tap) Some questions as to what you all want: 1) Should these options be "global" in the sense they apply to all databases or "local" in the sense that each database has its own set of options? 2) Maybe both of the above senses so that you have global options which can be overridden on a database by database basis? 3) For the "local" sense, how I should MobileDB, DB 0.2.x, and JFile databases be handled which cannot store any extra information? 4) Any other features that you want in the grid widget? (The "grid widget" is the code responsible for displaying the information in the list view.) Different colored columns, right justified text or better yet, configurable justification for each column? 5) Other suggestions on this topic are welcome. -Tom Dyas |

The limitation is in the code in DB which rebuilds the database when field types change. I was lazy and didn't write the code to parse a string and convert it to a time. I could probably adapt the code from the palm-db-tools but I don't know when it would get done. |

I'm actually working on a Tcl/Tk GUI for pilot-db databases. It's in the very very early stages at this point, and not trivial to set up because it depends on my jstools (soon to be renamed aqtools) suite, but when I get a bit further with it I'll post it here. What I have so far is the ability to parse an existing pilot-db .info file, read a .csv file into a Tcl list based on the fields in the .info file, and append records to that list using a dialogue box with appropriate widgets (e.g. a checkbutton for Boolean fields). Re: non-palm interfaces to DB I've been ruminating on the creation of just such a thing. Tom of course has a set of command line tools for converting csv + files to DB binary format and back. My thought was to take Tcl/Tk plus TkTable (a GUI extension providing a spreadsheet like interface) and to wrap around Tom's commands so that one could load the data into a spreadsheet (with perhaps a second window displaying the out of band information like column names, types, etc.). The tool would allow one to manipulate the data, then to generate a DB database from it. Unfortunately, my time has been so limited that I've been unable to date to begin the effort of writing the app. -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. There are many such databases available for other palm database programs. A few examples include o Phone/Web information for airlines, hotels and car rental agencies o NPR radio stations o Chemistry data o Airport codes o Area codes o senator/congress person info etc. If not, what would be the best way to start one?
