Lots of gnome apps use tabs. they say that using tabs basically duplicates the functionality of the window manager, and tabs are a necessary-evil, until the window manager reach a level where they can 'understand' that several windows should be grouped together... like the 'tab' feature of black/flux/whatever-box window managers + some heuristics maybe to find out which windows to group.... if you search for 'tabs' on the gnome-usability list, there are some usable mails... http://lists.gnome.org/archives/usability/ bye, gabor p.s: i am not saying tabs should be removed (i don't use them personally, but i can understand that some people like them...my personal problem with them was that i didn't know when i got a new message...i use the raise-on-events feature, but sometimes the window got raised, and 2 people wrote me something, and i found one of them, and forgot about the other...well, i could check the tabs for red text, but for me it is easier to simply have separate windows for separate chats) |
