do you mean an auto-reply? as best as i can tell, status, including message, 
is being set correctly.

gaim-applet exits for gnome in the gtk1-stable branch (the 0.59.x series). 
in the current cvs code, it has been replaced with a docklet which conforms to 
the www.freedesktop.org standards, and will thus work in any implementation of 
that standard (gnome's current cvs, and kde with a patch from redhat). a 
docklet for windows is being worked on.
