It might not seem like much, but for a Windows user who's just switched to Linux, having the red and blue reversed can be very disorienting. Hope you like it -mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Sean Egan (seanegan) Date: 2004-11-20 17:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=199625 I'm working on someone else's patch to have the colors customizable ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: alan johnson (chomo) Date: 2004-03-29 15:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=943591 yes colours would help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: themurphster (themurphster) Date: 2004-03-22 17:57 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=991243 Hardcoding the switch for win32 is an idea, I actually considered trying to make it part of the win32 plugin, so you'd only get the option when using win32, but then I thought about how, when I eventually migrate to Linux, I'm going to want to take my colors with me. That's why I decided to make it universal. Shame you're getting the impression that Win users don't like Gaim. I wonder if it's really like that or if you're just hearing the squeaky wheels. I think it's awesome. All the benefits of AIM+DeadAIM and open source to boot. I'm a big fan of the project. Maybe it's just 0.75's cursor problems and how the GTK that's packaged with it needs an upgrade. 0.76 should be hit, especially with WYSIWYG. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andrew Sayman (lorien420) Date: 2004-03-22 15:25 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=111139 What about no preference at all? What if it just #if win32'd this and only used AIM's colors on that platform. Something like this might speed adoption. I don't personally believe this will, because it seems like most people migrating from AIM just want an excuse not to like Gaim. I also know two people who've used Gaim on Windows and haven't mentioned the color switch at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2004-03-21 17:21 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 we release with a consistent color choice, but in cvs, colors used for the screennames, as well as the logo, frequently reflect the current holiday, so i'm quite used to my colors changing around ;-) perhaps it is just the reverse, that we as developers are particularly insensitive to this. that's one of the reasons i'm leaving this open to see if anyone else thinks differently. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: themurphster (themurphster) Date: 2004-03-21 16:55 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=991243 Poor though their color choice may have been, switching to a client that uses _the exact opposite_ for its coor scheme is very disorienting. When I use IM, I frequently alt-tab to the conversation window and glance at the bottom to make sure I was the last to send. When I see red, I instantly think "ok nothing new to see" and alt-tab back right away, almost without thinking about it. At this point my brain is wired to think "cool color = they're talking to me / warm color = I can go do something else." Having that reversed has always been my only real gripe with Gaim. All-in-all I agree with and applaud Gaim's and Gnome's call for an end to preference overload, and I see why you would be reluctant. But I do think that having this option would let winaim refugees feel at home much quicker. I'd encourage you switch your colors for a few days and see how much it affects you. If I'm just exceptionally sensitive to this, it's my problem and I'll back down. But I have reason to believe that many would agree with me. -Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2004-03-21 13:51 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 i personally dislike this idea, i've always thought that their color choice was poor, and i think that with everything else that is changing around them on such a move, even in the case of moving from winaim to wingaim, that "they are used to it this way" is a poor reason to add a new preference. I'll leave this open though in case any of my co-developers disagree with me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=300235&aid=920403&group_id=235 |
