If I understood your suggestion properly, you're advocating restoring tags directly, not manipulating the formatting bits. In that case, it's quite possible that the buttons will be out of sync, as you're bypassing the code that updates them when the format is updated. Paste some text. 3. Type some text. In that case, only the content from #1 should be linked. In general, I'd agree with this, but in this case, I'm not sure it's the right approach. I'm not sure it's the wrong approach either, though.
