It is the very exact system we are talking about... with the same setup, the same permissions, the same protocols in the same place. It looks like a permission problem to me too, but again it is the same exact system. Unprivileged account works only when booted to hard drive ext2. Root account works fine for both hard drive ext2 install and live-CD. To make sure there were no differences between the two systems, for once more I took the hard drive partition (where gaim worked just fine for both accounts) and transfered it to live-CD.
