Was reading the FAQ and found this to be false (at least for windows gaim):
Can I add SMS numbers to my buddy list?
Not currently. This functionality has been broken since around September 2003. There is no ETA for when it will be fixed. 

You can add a phone number to the list, albeit with an error pop up that says it can't. The number appears on the list anyway and it does work.
