Add a "New" image for new listings

OK I hate to be dumb but sometimes I am. I have tired just about everything I can think of to be able to add a small image that shows new listings. I can add a form element called new and then have a yes or no answer but is there a way that if a checkbox is clicked (in edit) that an image can then show in place of text? I notice that if I manually add one to the source data it will work but how can I do that without manually editing the database?
