It appears to work in PHP4: class foo { function blippy() { echo "Boy howdy!"; } } class bar extends foo { function blippy() { echo "hello, sailor!"; } } $foovar = new foo; $barvar = new bar; $foovar->blippy(); $barvar->blippy(); This does what I'd want: Boy howdy!hello, sailor! That opens the possibility of having one base class for the database functionality. It would need more research of course... but the advantage might be to have one pure class to define the interface, rather than cloning the DBM or mysql implementations. sw ...............................ooo0000ooo.................................
