Bugs item #579466, was opened at 2002-07-09 22:55 You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=115539&aid=579466&group_id=15539 Category: Usability Group: phpws0.8.x Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Michael Cannon (comprock) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Comments: A Real Clients Feedback Initial Comment: I'm working on a paid customization of phpwebsite for a client up here in Seattle and thought the developers would like to know what the client feedback looks like. Presently at http://test.jflesher.com, soon http://jflesher.com Made it through most of the site and overall, it looks and performs well. Had quite a bit of trouble with Comments and Submitting on articles. Here's what we found: 1. After clicking on Add Comment, the form is confusing because of the hyperlink "Login" in the space for "your Name". If you click the link (not knowing if you should or not), you go back to the article page. Not sure why this is here. I would leave a blank for the person to add their name. 2. Once you enter a comment and submit it, there is a strange page that comes up for a second, then you're back at the article. Not sure why this page flashes in at that time. 3. After scrolling to the bottom of the article, you can see the comments. The navigation/ordering options for comments does not work. Also, comments have a "Score" and all articles are anonymous because of Item #1. 4. If you leave the comment boxes blank but hit "OK" you get a screen that says "need to fill in subject....) but only for a couple seconds and then you are back at the article. Intuitively, I would think that this screen would stay there and then allow me to choose to go back to submitting a comment or use the other navigation available to me. 5. When you go to submit an article or suggest one, the Link of the Moment and Client Quotes are not functioning. Link says, " No Random Link for Today" and Client Quotes says, "Sorry, there are no quotes in the database!" 6. When you go to "Read more..." for an article, the survey is on the right side. Is this right? The survey, I thought, would only show up on the main page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=115539&aid=579466&group_id=15539 |

Greetings all, Things are full speed ahead on the new core. All the guys here are on full-time status, so progress *= 4. Take a look at CVS and go into the mod directory. Most of the work should is apparent in this location. The install/upgrade/uninstall module is about 50% finished (it installs). Once done, we will release a new tarball. This tarball will be a HUGE improvement over the last release. I believe once the I/U/U module is done, we should be able to have regular updates so everyone can follow along on releases automatically without CVS checkouts. BTW I have not tried a CVS checkout lately so I can't presume it will function properly. Please wait for the tarball. One last thing I would like to touch on. We hope that by expanding the functionality of phpwebsite will allow more platforms to use it. Because we can't supply technical support for all platforms, I would be interested if anyone would like to become a platform specialist. Basically, you would volunteer to field questions about a particular OS, DB, or web server setup and help those who are having problems. In exchange, you would be the contact point for fixes in the program. This person should be knowledgeable enough to offer suggestions in php code. Please contact Brian (br...@tu...) or I if interested. Thanks, Matthew McNaney Internet Systems Architect Electronic Student Services Email: ma...@tu... Praggers, Table prefixes are useful to sites that use hosting companies like SourceForge that only provide a single database to their customers. I believe the main use for table prefixes at this time is multiple language (i18n) support. If/when phpWebSite includes UTF-8/Unicode support, table prefixes may be unnecessary. -- Mike Noyes <mh...@us...> http://sourceforge.net/users/mhnoyes/ http://leaf-project.org/ |

Hello, This is in response to Praggers letter. > 1. table prefixes. I think table prefixes are un-professional and place > an unneccessary extra burden on both development and maintenance effort. I think that is probably true, however this was overwhelmingly requested by people who were only allowed one database. The argument "purchase/create another database" didn't seem to phase these folks. So table prefixes are standard now and in the 0.9.x version as well. The bright side to this however is that if you use the majority of the core SQL functions, you never have to worry about it as the core takes care of it automatically. As for the performance hit, I can only guess it would only manifest itself should you chose to actually use the table prefix. All it is doing is adding a few characters to SQL query string. If people want to run 10 installs on one database and then complain about speed, well... :) > 2. Preference for PHP classes. In my opinion, classes are counter to the > spirit of PHP. Sorry but I have to disagree. Granted, before I started coding in classes, I didn't like them. But I would NEVER go back now. It is not because of the C++ snobbery, they are just really convenient for me. > It is not as if the PHP implementation of > classes is in any sense complete - in fact it is extremely rudimentary > compared to Java or C++. I have heard that and I probably butcher the way classes are supposed to work, however I know my code has become much cleaner since I started using them. You will have to know how to use core classes in 0.9.x but you aren't required to program your module using them if you don't wish to. > Classes only come into their own for the > development of really big applications - operating systems and the like. And that is where we see phpWebSite going. > In fact I know from experience that classes > in PHP are actually a pain compared to straightforward coding. Again programming preference and I would not try to convince you otherwise. Program the way that allows you to do your best work. In the end my question is "does it work" not "how does it work." > 3. Multiple includes of config.php - Why include the config.php file > more than once per page? A shameful yes. Since the 0.8.x series originally was Nuke code, so many bandaids and chewing gum were used in getting it running. But that was part of the learning process. Once again, the 0.9.x series doesn't have a lot of the coding nonsense that plagued 0.8.x. Thanks for your input Praggers. I hope you take a chance to look at the Fallout code. We are very pleased with the direction it is taken. As an aside, I am finishing up the module installation protocol, so we should have a new tarball next week. It will contain a lot more code than what you may have seen from the demo. Also, we will settle in to getting a sturdy CVS copy so that it can be installed and run without hassle. Hi there I have finally bitten on the bullet and downloaded version 0.8.2 with a view to further developing my attempt at an Adverts module. Having read the MODULES_README file I would like to make the following observations: 1. table prefixes. I think table prefixes are un-professional and place an unneccessary extra burden on both development and maintenance effort. The only occasion I can think of where you might need to use prefixes would be where you are using a budget ISP account where you are only permitted a single database. I am not convinced that prefixes are worth the undoubted overall performance hit as well as the extra coding effort for the sake of the rare occasions where cramming lots of sites onto an already crowded server results in acceptable page download times. In fact, providing table prefixes could well result in PhpWebSite getting an undeserved reputation for slow performance and resultant bandwidth-clobbering. 2. Preference for PHP classes. In my opinion, classes are counter to the spirit of PHP. We have functions galore and the include() mechanism to compartmentalise our code and render it re-usable, so what further benefit do classes confer? It is not as if the PHP implementation of classes is in any sense complete - in fact it is extremely rudimentary compared to Java or C++. I know that academics like to go on about 'modelling' and 'encapsulation' but such concepts are simply excess baggage in what is primarily a lean, fast, low overhead scripting language for spiffing up one web page at a time; classes only come into their own for the development of really big applications - operating systems and the like. I don't see a single benefit in having any class constructs involved in the relatively simple client-server relationship. In fact I know from experience that classes in PHP are actually a pain compared to straightforward coding. 3. Multiple includes of config.php - Why include the config.php file more than once per page? I was amazed to see that the virtually universal dbconnect() function (in the file dbconnect.php) actually invokes an inclusion of the entire config.php file every time it is called! Surely this is crazy? All that is needed is to declare $dbhost, $dbuname and $dbpass as globals and actually code the dbconnect() function definition in the config.php file. This would avoid the ridiculous and slow procedure of including config.php, then including dbconnect.php which in turn includes config.php, etc on every page request. I have done this on my own site and have even deleted the file dbconnect.php - it works just fine without it! At 2AM I am feeling very productive so here goes. http://demo.phpgirl.com with default admin username/pass. make sure it is the default theme (previously known as club 1 in the multisite test) as the plugin is installed only in the first site. Checkout the admin side of HTML Helper and give feedback please. The UI is pretty horrible but I never said i am an UI designer :) I slimmed down the button bar according to Matt's version in fallout. The wording may be a bit odd.. as i did not pay much attention to it. The article has to be saved at least as draft before you can add images to it. I added 3 fields to stories: show_topic_image, active and post_to_mainpage. show_topic_image: adding images to articles will probably/possibly make the article look a bit messy so make topic image optional. there is no code in the demo site to take this switch into account. so the topic images will show up everytime. active: possibility to save drafts for later use post_to_mainpage: whether or not to show the article in index.php. even without the HTML Helper these fields would be very helpful in phpws and id like to add these before the next release. paivi |

can we add a draft (active) flag to the stories table? i think it would be a big benefit if the admins could save stories as drafts (as inactive) and post them when ready. i dont think it would cause big issues/additions to the code. please correct me if i am wrong. paivi |

Simply put, you can't include files from with PHP classes. You can include them before the class or afterwards but not within it. Something I'm moving to is Smalltalks MVC model. Model, View, Control. With models being the actual data operations created into a class (class listuser_model would get/set data but not create views of it). Control would be like the buttons on forms or links, but even it's related to how index.php's switch'ing. Lastly is View or pretty much the user interface such as class listuser which extends listuser_model by calling the get/set methods from within their own methods. Through the MVC methodology you can abstract many of those common functions that you use from module to module while only worrying about the view. MVC is just one way to allow abstraction of how you do something and how you display it. Hopefully the following will help explain what I'm talking about. I'll be releasing a sales lead module here shortly built upon this methodology. Thank goodness for OOD courses... Now, I just can't wait for polymorphism in PHP... // listuser_model.php // model has data get/set operations, but not UI stuff class listuser_model { var $name function getName() { return $this->name; } function setName($newName) { $this->name = $newName; } } // listuser.php // view is the UI stuff class listuser extends listuser_model { function viewName () { $box_title = 'Some Name'; $box_content = $this->getName(); $this->display($box_title, $box_content); } function viewForm () { $box_title = 'Change Name'; $box_content = " <form method='post' action='mod.php'> <input type='hidden' name='mod' value='listuser' /> <input type='hidden' name='op' value='changeName' /> <input type='text' name='name' value='$this->getName()' /><br /> <input type='submit' name='submit' value='Submit' /> <input type='reset' name='reset' value='Reset' /> </form> "; $this->display($box_title, $box_content); } function display($title, $contents) { thememainbox($title, $contents); } } // index.php // one way to think of controller include_once('listuser.php'); include_once('listuser_model.php'); $L = new listuser(); switch($op) { case 'changeName': $L->setName($_POST['name']); break; default: $L->viewName(); $L->viewForm(); } Cheers, Michael ----- Principal, Cannon BOSE Business Operation * Software Engineering mi...@ca... www.cannonbose.com 1-206-351-0159 |

If anyone has an idea > of how I could get this to work please let me know. > > Thanks! > Adam Adam: In-so-far as I can tell, that just won't work. To get around it, you will have to either: 1) Write all your class functions within the class (simply edit "class_functions.php", wrapping all the code in that file that is NOT global within the class defining syntax), or 2) Write stub functions in the class for each function in class_functions.php. This is probably a better method if you are porting code, as you will be able to replace the stub functions with working code without breaking the old code in the process. So why won't what you're doing work? Every single included or required class is parsed in the GLOBAL namespace, not within your class. ($this-> references will not work if within functions in class_functions.php). A class is a data construct, most likely stored within memory as a complex associative array (this is basically how PERL, Java, C++, Objective-C, Visual Basic all do it--I don't think PHP is going to be much different that C++ in this regard). The functions are basically anonymous functions within the class, and PHP knows how to handle the class data types. So including a file in the middle of the definition is not going to fly with PHP. Sorry I can't help, but I hope this helps explain why. -- Randall Wood rh...@ma... |

I looked in sourceforge and didn't find a bug report for this, but, before I track it down, I thought I'd ask. If someone puts in a URL such as http://www.hostricity.com/democraticcandidate It is accepted with no problem. But, if I put in: http://www.hostricity.com/democraticcandidate/index.htm It rejects the URL. It's pretty obvious what's wrong. I'll take a look at it if no one else is working on this. Geoff |

i was asking about this a while back and since my old boss asked again... i thought id give it a try. and it looks like i have the darn thing running :) to remind you of the problem: 30 different student clubs that want a website. having a set of files for all would be a bit tiresome to upgrade so requirement is one shared set of files and one database per site. anyone available to test this? it was so easy in the end that i am thinking i must have missed something big. this is how i did it: 1. register_globals=on 2. create a directory configs and place the sites config.php files there, in my case i am using club1_config.php, club2_config.php, club3_config.php (i am including the examples i used). create databases for every site 3. add include('open_session.php') to header.php 4. replace config.php with my version (a short one) 5. goto http://yoursite/?cl=club1, http://yoursite/?cl=club2 and http://yoursite/?cl=club3 and do a fresh install for all. login as admin and change the theme so it is different for every site. if you run into issues, chances are that open_session is not included in that file. i have not thought about user logins etc.. since it is not that important for this project. installing modules produces some errors for not being able to include open_session but the modules still install fine. of course i could set the full path for open_session.php and this issue would be gone. i have tested this with mozilla/linux/php4.2 only and all browser reports are welcome :) the session stuff is not 100% clear to me so any ideas for config.php are also very welcome. for instance how to make sure if someone types a name that does not exist, the user goes to clubs.php file. i tried several versions but nothing produced the desired effect (i am a session dummie :) my demo site is at http://demo.phpgirl.com/clubs.php (very crude :). i am keeping this page outside phpwebsite so it fits with the rest of the main school site and to keep a list of links to all the clubs. thats it, i am done for today (well, it is 3am :) paivi |

I have discovered that Past Announcements do not seem to be working on my sites using the Default or phpWebSite themes. I traced it down and find that $index has the value 1, so the code is being executed. The next code is the database code to pull the announcements. Since past announcements are working on phpwebsite.appstate.edu, I thought I'd ask before I looked further! Anyone aware of a problem in the Default or phpWebSite themes that is stopping the past announcements from displaying? Geoff |
