Attached is a template for anyone who feels like writing a translation for
PHPWeather 2 - it should be easy enough to work out what's going on - look
at
pw_text_en.php.

I've also included, for anyone who can't use CVS, pw_text.php which actually
does the work of parsing the metar into text. If your language doesn't work
the
same way as ours, and you are feeling brave, you can overwrite the functions
in
pw_text with new ones in pw_text_xx

Besides that, it seems that not all airports do the tafs next to the metars. 
My closest airport (EHEH) seems to give tafs only when very severe weather 
conditions or conditions that pilots must know of exist. For regular tafs, I 
would have to go to the main airports around here (EHAM and so on), which 
are further away...

Would be nice to have taf support though..

Yep, the format is described in ICAO Annex 3. The items are mostly the same
as in the metar. The tafs can also be obtained at NOAA on this address:

The problem here is that you can have several occurencies of the same group.
Eg. you can easily have 5 to 10 cloudgroups (this is a simple one: EKYT
250510Z 251206 23008KT 9999 SCT030 BKN180 BECMG 1618 BKN020 TEMPO 1803 5000
BKN012 TEMPO 0306 2000 -RADZ BKN004=)

You need some self-discipline :)

This is the way that [for example] the PHP bugs are dealt with. The plan
would
be that only developers need sign up to the bugs list (could even make it
closed) so that bugs get submitted on sf. The bugs list would be an internal
tool, rather than anything for public consumption.

bug-tracker at SourceForge? If we had a mailinglist, I would be much
more inclined to simply answer on the list instead of using the

Yes, but the best thing is, that it's just as easy to make a
translation as with the old system. It's possible to make a lot of
nice things with the new system, but a normal translation only
involves translating the entries in the $strings array - just as it
did before.

Agreed. I've never tried the bug-tracker at SourceForge, though. But I
can see that you've already filed two bugs (and closed one of them
again).

Is it possible to have each new bug-report send to me automatically? I
can see that, that I can associate an email address with the 'Bugs'
artifact type, but how does one add individual email addresses?

Of course, if anyone feels like writing translations for the new
version, that would be cool too. Right now, it speaks danish,
norwegian, hungarian and english. There's a new system for including
the translations, that hopefully can cope with pretty much any
language. Personally, I find the new system much easier to
understand.

Of course, if you know how to use CVS, you can just export (or
checkout) the phpweather-1.x module, or the phpweather module to see
the new version in all it's glory. As Martin said, it pretty much
works... but it needs PHP4. If you can i) get it, and ii) run it, I'd
strongly encourage you to have a go.

Also, sourceforge has a good bug tracking system. If you find a bug,
it would certainly help me if you could enter it on there. As
phpweather gets more complex (and hopefully has more people working
on it again) it will be important to keep track of who's doing what.

I've just applied the patch for windchill support to PHP Weather 1.x.
This means that all the translations needs to be updated - right now
they report the windchill in English.

It would be easiest, if the translators would do it themselves using
CVS at SourceForge. If you lack write-permission to CVS, then go to
Sourceforge.net and create an account. Then mail the account-name to
me and I'll add you to the list of developers.

If you cannot use CVS, then just send the changes to the list so that
they can be part of the next release.

Apropos the next release: I think it's time for a new release of the
old version. I know that many people would love to play with the new
support for icons.

I also think that the new version is getting close - it works very
well on my machine. So when we get the webpage at SourceForge working,
I think we can make a release.

Apropos the webpage: you might have noticed that I've put up some
pages. I used the navigation-system I also use at gimpster.com because
it seams to be fairly flexible. If anybody has a better idea, then
please come forward.

It would also be great, if someone could make some sort of design for
the pages. It should just be a simple design - nothing fancy.

Just a note of praise for the PHP Weather....great
program. Thanks to the entire team for a very useful
program.

Below is a modification I made to the .inc program to
calulate windchill in both F and C. I placed this code
right after the relative humidity calc in the process
metar function. I also modified the locale-en.inc to
print a "The windchill is..." statement in the full
pretty print. Note the condition that temperature be
below 40f and wind above 3 mph for the calculation to
be valid. These conditions are a combination of the F
and C version requirements. Also, these equation are
the "new" windchill formula released about Nov 2001.

I hope you guys consider this little addition.

Hmm - they wont change their firewall at SourceForge. So now we will
have to see what they say at NWS. I've sent them another email to a
more specific address, so lets hope they answer it soon.

Those calculations are totally wrong - I forgot that we want to fetch
the data several times each day. So you should multiply the figures
with 24 or 48 to get some more realistic numbers.

Possible solution to SF problem

Hi everybody,

I might have found a rather cool way to solve the problem with
updating our database at SourceForge... we can simply grab all ~3000
METARs from NWS each half hour.

I thought this would be impossible - or rather, that it could take too
long. But I tried it this today using a program called puf which can
make parallel downloads, see http://puf.sourceforge.net/.

Using 20 parallel downloads, it took about 5 minutes to download
METARs for all stations in our stations.csv file. All the METARs
combined is just 230 Kb uncompressed. By using bzip2 we end up with a
file of just 50 Kb(!).

I could set up a cronjob at my university, which would get the METARs
and upload the result to SourceForge every 30 minutes. If would then
start a PHP script at SourceForge which would update the databases.
This would mean, that there would be data available for /every/
airport at all times - people will be able to pick a random airport
and the data will be presented right away.

But before we can do this, I think we'll have to talk to the guys at
NWS. They might not agree with us, that 3000 requests every 30 minutes
is such a good idea for their server :-)

So, I've sent an email where I explain these things - my hope is, that
they will combine the 3000 files into a single file at their server,
so that we can get the data using a single transfer.

Also, since the amount of data is so small, it wouldn't be a problem
to keep a history of METAR reports for the last month (7.5 MB
uncompressed) or even the last year as packages on SourceForge (90 MB
compressed) There's plenty of fancy thing we could use that kind of
data for...

We have a website!

Hi everybody,

I've just commited a rough website to CVS. The design is virtually
non-existing and even worse: PHP Weather doesn't work :-/

I've tried with both the old and the new version, and they both fail.
All they say is, that there's no data for XXXX which is clearly wrong.

I've made two directories in the root of our webspace: phpweather and
phpweather-1.x. The idea is that we'll put the new and old versions of
PHP Weather in those directories, so that we can include the right
files from there. Both versions will have to use DBM files because
it's a little difficult to store password to a MySQL base securely in
CVS :-) But DBM files are actually really fast, so this shouldn't be a
problem.

Our problem is, that the scripts can't connect to the NWS servers. I
just tried to make a really simple page:

That didn't work either, but it works with
http://www.sourceforge.net/. So my guess is, that we're trapped behind
the big bad firewall at SourceForge :-( SourceForge are very careful
with the security at their site, so we'll probably have to figure out
a work-around. (Something like a cron-job at my university which makes
a SSH-connection and updates the DBM files...)

Feel free to play with this - I'm going to have something to eat now.

Good idea... I tried it, but the stupid cvs-to-changelog Perl script
didn't like the ':' in http://gyulai.freeyellow.com/. I could try and
change the script, or we could use your SourceForge address instead.

It's a good point. The 'usermap' shows my old email address,
on which I received many-many SPAM........
(fortunately I don't use it any more... :)

In my case it would be better to show my homepage URL, on which I giv=
e
my email address (so, if anyone wants to write to me, it's possible).

Maybe it's better if you modify both files personally.
