Yes, you've found a known bug :-/ > I use version 2.0.0 and i was wondering if anything had been fixed > in a CVS release... No, this hasn't changed, but I think we could make a solution. I've written a bit about it here at SourceForge: http://makeashorterlink.com/?T162215A2 I don't have time to implement this myself right now, so if someone feels up to the task, then please say so. I don't think it's that hard: * The stations.csv file has to be extended with the extra data. Perhaps we should change the format of the file, I don't think it was particularly clever of me to use ## to delimit countries and # to start comments... * The SQL-based databases has to have their schema updated with extra fields for latitude and longitude, not a problem. * The db_null database has to change by increasing PW_LINE_LENGTH and changing lookup_icao() accourdingly. * New access methods should be added to data_retrieval.php to access the new information. * The pw_images class has to be changed so that it takes advantage for the new information. I'll try and provide all the help I can through the mailinglist if someone wants to give it a try. > however I cannot install CVS on my computer so I was wondering if > somebody had either done a patch or is actually making the latest > nightlies readily available on his/her website. I used to have a cronjob running at SourceForge that would make a snapshot of CVS and put it here: http://phpweather.net/downloads/ But recently the script stopped working: it got errors about a read-only file system... I haven't really looked into it, though... -- Martin Geisler My GnuPG Key: 0xF7F6B57B See http://gimpster.com/ and http://phpweather.net/ for: PHP Weather => Shows the current weather on your webpage and PHP Shell => A telnet-connection (almost :-) in a PHP page. |

Hi, i m new to this list. I have installed this lovely php on a server in France but I live in japan at the moment and I noticed that even when it s nite in japan, the cloud image shows the sun... I kind of understood in looking quickly in the archives that it was probably due to the fact that the choosing between the sun and the moon image was dependant on the time of the server on which the php was hosted... I use version 2.0.0 and i was wondering if anything had been fixed in a CVS release... however I cannot install CVS on my computer so I was wondering if somebody had either done a patch or is actually making the latest nightlies readily available on his/her website. Yes the data is old, they have changed the site slightly since my last post :-( THey are now serving the data up from ASP pages, with a bit more <table> padding to make parsing the data more interesting. I've run my script with the new URLs though and it still works OK Agree with what you say, for stuff here you could parse these pages first then fall back to NWS. Here are my notes on the script for you to investigate at your leisure... --------- snip ----------- They've moved the swedish metars to another server which uses ASP. You can either get their headers or build your own when you can figure out what text files are available. Based on this it should be possible to build your own customised page or just grab everything! http://www.aro.lfv.se/metais/MetInfo.asp?TextFile=metar.eg.list.txt&TextFile=metar.ed.l ist.txt&TextFile=metar.benelux.list.txt&TextFile=metar.alps.list.txt&TextFile=metar.lf.list .txt&TextFile=metar.le.list.txt&TextFile=metar.lp.list.txt&TextFile=metar.li.list.txt&TextFi le=metar.baltic.list.txt&Te http://www.aro.lfv.se/metais/MetInfo.asp?TextFile=metar.eg.list.txt&SubTitle=United%A 0Kingdom&T=METAR%A0Europe&Frequency=30 http://www.aro.lfv.se/metais/MetInfo.asp?TextFile=metar.eg.list.txt&SubTitle=NoWhere &T=METAR%A0UK&Frequency=30 http://www.aro.lfv.se/metais/MetInfo.asp?TextFile=metar.others.list.txt&SubTitle=&T=& Frequency=30 The files in use are: sweden metar.sweden.list.txt nordic metar.en.list.txt metar.ef.list.txt metar.ek.list.txt metar.bi.list.txt europe metar.eg.list.txt metar.ed.list.txt metar.benelux.list.txt metar.alps.list.txt metar.lf.list.txt metar.le.list.txt metar.lp.list.txt metar.li.list.txt metar.baltic.list.txt metar.others.list.txt ----------------- unsnip ----------------- Best Regards, Nick |

Have you verified that gmmktime() works on your system? We've seen problems with gmmktime() before... It's important that the server knows its timezone otherwise gmmktime() doesn't work. See if gmmktime(0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1970) gives you 0 and if mktime(0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1970) gives you the number of seconds your server is offset from UTC time. I'm in Denmark where we're one hour infront of UTC, so I got -3600 from the call to mktime(). PS. Since you're running PHP 4, you should use version 2.0.0 of PHP Weather instead of 1.6x. It wont help you with the time-problem, though. |

We could have each ICAO specify how it should be fetched: most of the ICAOs would just use the default NOAA fetcher, but the UK ones could specify that they should use the Swedish URL above. I don't have time to implement this right now, but I think it's worth considering... |

I came across this when investigating why my phpweather seemed to be causing longer than expected page load times during the period it should have been using the cache. In essence, a majority of phpweather calls on my site are not using the cache as designed (cache misses if you will): The phpweather uses the following construct in phpweather.inc: $date_parts = explode(':', strtr($date, '/ ', '::')); $date_unixtime = gmmktime($date_parts[3], $date_parts[4], 0, $date_parts[1], $date_parts[2], $date_parts[0]); Here's an example of my metar table: metar=EGSC 071150Z 10001KT 9999 FEW027 BKN055 16/07 Q1020, timestamp=20021009030000, station=EGSC The report time is 11:50 on 10/07 but that timestamp looks really odd 03:00 on 10/09. Now that can't be right. I don't know whether this is a bug in php-4.2.3's implementation of gmmktime but I've verified that the correct information is going into the call. Any ideas? -- Danny Ledger (a.k.a squatty) da...@sq... http://www.squatty.com |

Thanks for the recent details of cz taf/metars. Are you aware of http://blinder.lfv.se/met/metar.europe.htm - follow the links here for other taf/metars for Europe. I use this in preference to weather.noaa.gov for UK stuff as NWS seems to to lag behind, especially when its daytime in the US for some reason. > Personally, I avoid using the trailing/serial/final comma. A comma in this position is known as a serial comma, often called "Harvard" or "Oxford" comma, and is only really appropriate where its omission makes a list confusing, eg if the final entry in a list contains an "and" itself. That's the classical approach, anyway. Truth is, in technical writing you'd often use a serial comma to avoid any possible ambiguity. All that's really important is that you're consistent (obviously not an issue here :) Cheers, Max -- Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority. * Doctor Who |

OK, just my two cents on the matter of the commas. Personally, I avoid using the trailing/serial/final comma. Newspapers (if they're written right) will ALWAYS avoid them. Why? The Associated Press Stylebook says to avoid them. I've seen English teachers violently debate it, as well. My preference: avoid them. It makes the list cleaner, and there's already an overuse of commas by folks who don't know how to use them properly (in my opinion). Punctuation in general is just over-rated <hehe>. we should just all write our sentences like this completely omitting all important valuable and relevant punctuation marks ;-) OK, I'm done being a brat -- I'm like this on Fridays :-). -Jake -Speaking the Mother Tongue as Well -- At least the Americanized Version of It -----Original Message----- From: php...@li... Subject: Re: pw_text_cs, pw_text_nl & couple of suggestions Traditionally, you use a trailing comma to separate all the items in a series. This is preferred by most academic style guides and editors. It's generally accepted that you have the option to omit the final comma before the "and" (or other conjunction) if the list is simple. You'd do this to help the list flow better, but only if you can obviously preserve the meaning of the sentence. I believe that newspapers do this fairly often. However, it's *always* correct to use the comma before the last item in the series, and it's sometimes required to do so to make the meaning clear. If you don't have total control of the items in the list (which you don't in this programming scenario), it's safest to include the comma before the conjunction. I think what you have for 'list_sentences_final_and' is correct. First let me start by saying how great phpweather is! My compliments to the other authors who not doubt have spent a lot of time and effort creating such a solid Open Source project. Second, I want to introduce all of you to a project I've been a part of named Geeklog (http://geeklog.sf.net). Geeklog is a 'blog', otherwise known as a Weblog. It allows you to create your own virtual community area, complete with user administration, story posting, messaging, comments, polls, calendar, web links, and more! It can run on many different operating systems, and uses PHP4 and MySQL. My point in all this is that I recently implemented a Geeklog module or block using phpweather as the foundation (phpweather 1.61). The module is designed to display customizable weather information. I'd like to get your thoughts on what I've done in hopes of starting a dialogue with you to enhance future releases. You can view the module on my site: http://www.squatty.com <http://www.squatty.com/> . It's located on the right side about halfway down the page. But remember that PHP Weather itself is based on a Perl script called Geo::METAR: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/perl/Geo-METAR/ So perhaps it would be easier for you to look at this instead. Thanks! > In the UK Military airfield METARS you will see a colour state > reported, one of: > BLACK BLU WHT GRN YLO YLO1 YLO2 AMB RED. > which indicates the visibility and cloud base. > > A sample METAR: > EGXW 100950Z 22008KT 9999 FEW016 16/11 Q1018 BLU NOSIG > > [...] > > Maybe someone would like to include this in the METAR parsing > routine? Doesn't the regular visibility and cloud-group information already include the information given by the colours? If not, then I guess that we could include the code, but if it's a special code that's only used at a handful of stations in the UK, then perhaps it's too much trouble to be worth it... Hi phpweather devs. I am working on a similar prog in Perl (whilst trying to learn PERL at the same time!) then I discovered yours... :-) I dont have much php knowledge but I am familiar with the UK METAR and TAF format (part of my day job!) I'd like to borrow some bits from your code for the metar parsing, to try and fix mine, and at the same time give something back in return. In the UK Military airfield METARS you will see a colour state reported, one of: BLACK BLU WHT GRN YLO YLO1 YLO2 AMB RED. which indicates the visibility and cloud base. A sample METAR: EGXW 100950Z 22008KT 9999 FEW016 16/11 Q1018 BLU NOSIG the UK mil airfields are in the ICAO series EGX? EGY? EGQ? (maybe others, dont have ICAO ref in front of me!) One odd one is EGYP which is actually Mount Pleasant,South Georgia - in the south atlantic! Heres a snip from my perl prog which explains them: if ($colour) { $colour =~ s/BLU/blue/g; # 8Km viz 2500ft cloud base $colour =~ s/WHT/white/g; # 5Km 1500ft $colour =~ s/GRN/green/g; # 3.7Km 700ft $colour =~ s/YLO/yellow/g; # 1.6Km 300ft $colour =~ s/YLO1/yellow 1/g; # 2.5km 500ft $colour =~ s/YLO2/yellow 1/g; # 1.6km 300ft $colour =~ s/AMB/amber/g; # 0.8Km 200ft $colour =~ s/RED/red/g; #<0.8km <200ft or sky obscured. $colour =~ s/BLACK/black/g; # airfield unuseable - precedes colour code print "Colour: $colour\n" } Maybe someone would like to include this in the METAR parsing routine? I've been working on way to pass the php-weather data to a flash movie. Please take a look at http://phpweather.sourceforge.net/flashtest/ It's pretty crude right now, I'd be happy to give my code to anyone is interested or can figure out a better way to do it. |

I presume you're running a version of PHP that doesn't have $PHP_SELF defined for whatever reason? Probably goes away with register_globals being turned off. I guess we should deal with this case now, since php defaults this way now. Chris, please enter a bug report on sourceforge.
