cannot config

I just untarred the latest tarball, pointed my browser there and went to
the configuration screen.

I showed the first set of options and chose them accordingly. However,
when I hit update options, I just get a blank page. Then, trying to go
back gives me a blank page as well.

Can anyone give me an idea what is wrong and how to fix it?

Using PHP 4.3.1.
