I'd reccommend the site http://www.phpbuilder.com - there are a lot of good
articles there.

It stands for "Tape Archive" - it's one of the earliest unix commands, which
was designed for backing files up onto tape. It's mostly used now to make
these kinds of distributions. Whereas winzip can combine various files into
one archive, unix gzip can't. So typically, you tar a whole directory, and
then gzip that tarred file.
