[ppa-help] [phppgadmin - Help] login failed

I keep getting the "login failed" message. I have checked the steps listed in
the FAQ and everything is ok. (No error messages in the log, pg_hba.conf set
up correctly, socket is open.) I'm not sure what else to try. I'm running phpPgAdmin
3.2.1 on PostgreSQL 7.4 and PHP 4.3.4. Any suggestions?
