#164 geographic extension

General (30)

PostGIS http://postgis.refractions.net/ is a geographic extension for PG.
It would be very good to add geographic support to phppgadmin. A minimum
set of functions would be to add the possibility of visualizing geographic
data, possibly through OpenLayers http://openlayers.org/, see
http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/example-list.html. With the same
OpenLayers, also simple online editing of geographic data is possible.
Integration of OpenLayers should be very simple:

I'm available for help if necessary.

I havent looked at the above, but for those with a strong itch regarding postgis, one thing I have thought about is seeing if there is something in the phppggis project that would be worth assimilating. http://sourceforge.net/projects/phppggis/

Tnx. Some of the phpggis could be reused. However, I think now things are changed since 2006 (last release of phpggis). The availability of OpenLayers makes things easier and more powerful.

Phppggis is quite outdated solution, it requires geoserver which is big package by itself. My suggestion would be to use OpenLayers, which shows geometry field as vector object, and use OpenStreetMap as free background map. Another thing is that usually you do not need just one object (row), but also object context (other rows), so better would be to show selected row as highlighted object, and others as "passive" objects. Also you need to re-project data to EPSG:4326 to overlay it to OSM/OpenLayers, but this is something what PostGIS can do easily. And maybe some more demanding users would need to reconfigure background to something else (google, bing, their own server).

We plan to add a whole new plugin architecture in PPA this summer during the GSoC.

Hopefully someone will jump on this to add this feature plugin at some point...
