Installation problems

No matter what I try, I can't seem to get this installed and working correctly.
The configuration.php file did not appear to save the configuration settings to the database so I had to enter them via phpmyadmin.
I've created three test categories, but don't see how to get them to display on the index page. I've checked via phpmyadmin and the entries appear to be in the categories table.
When I submit a site, I get the following error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /home/rh267/public_html/include/email_addition.php on line 19
The submitted site shows up in temp table and in the admin area. When I try to validate the submitted site, I get the following error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /home/rh267/public_html/include/email_confirmation.php on line 24
but it says that the site has been validated.
However, nothing shows up on the site and the links table is empty.
