Hey all. I was browsing the list archives and noticed the thread about PHPix2 going away. :-( I'm sorry to hear it. I've installed and played with different versions of it and was generally impressed with the design and engineering. If you're thinking about recommending another project to potential users, may I suggest that you take a look at Gallery? http://gallery.sourceforge.net Gallery's philosophy is somewhat different than PHPix2, but I think it's a very good product. I'm the founder and main developer, so I'm somewhat biased. See for yourself and make up your own mind. Gallery is a very active project and is in widespread use with over 13K installs out of 145K+ downloads). It works inside PostNuke and PHP-Nuke. Folks have written wrappers to integrate it into PhpBB2 and Geeklog also. Gallery 1 (the current version) is release quality, but is really just a prototype. Now that we understand what our users actually want we're in the process of rebuilding the product from the ground up including using a real database, a template engine, the ability to store metadata of your choice, easily embed it into other applications like PostNuke, external authentication, etc. regards, -Bharat |

The one thing I would have like to seen with PHPix, is the ability to use it as a PHPNuke module. Of all the image galleries I have tried, PHPix in my opinion was the best. Sad, really sad, to see it go. But in any case, I feel like we at least owe it to visitors to tell them that there are other options available if they need some hand-holding, don't you think? |

After meeting the dependencies, I think it's a pretty slick package. It has all of the features that people have been trying to add to phpix2. I think phpix2 is faster at creating the thumbnails and image resizes on the fly, but IDS has a command line script to automatically create the thumbs. Also, in general, I found that phpix2 seemed faster. The web interface is also a nice feature. I would hate to see phpix2 die away. Folks Since nobody appears to be stepping up to the plate for maintaining PHPix2 (I've moved on to a new project called photobob), I'm considering changing the homepage to recommend folks install IDS (http://ids.sourceforge.net/). When I modified the original PHPix, I was using IDS as an inspiration. Looking at IDS now, it is apparently very well maintained and has an active user community. I don't feel right advertising software that hasn't been updated in months, when there's something else that does the same job, but with better support. Any objections? |

I think I found a bug in Phpix. At least it acts like a bug. With picture names that contain an apostrephe, "'". the view.php throws up a warning claiming "Unable to open". Take the "'" out and all is well. Darn, I need to do a French phpix album and you know how those French love to use apostrephes! Is there a fix for this by chance? Also is there a way to drop the .jpg extension? So like, *are* there any current maintainers? Or has everyone, like me, installed it, played with it until convinced it works, and then forgotten about it? If the latter, I'll go in today for one last clean-up, changing my email address to the list address in all the various files, and add a note somewhere more prominent that PHPix2 is not being actively maintained. On that note, I've finished my Make/AWK photo album. The output is at http://woozle.org/~neale/albums/ And the program itself is at http://woozle.org/~neale/src/photobob/ This is the last time you'll hear about photobob on this list, but I figured some of the developers might be interested in it. Could you clarify for me? Hi Marplk. You need to read the INSTALL file for instructions. If you're installing from a shell account, just type "make" in the phpix directory. If you're installing with FTP, you need to rename some files. The INSTALL file should have all the information you need. Neale |

Glad it could help, and sorry the install file wasn't clear enough. The thing that typing "make" does, is this part of the install: 2. Rename all the files that begin with "dfl_" to the same filename without the "dfl_". (eg. "dfl_config.inc" gets renamed to "config.inc") Did you only rename dfl_config.inc? I guess we need to specify each file explicitly in the INSTALL file, like this: dfl_config.inc -> config.inc This certainly shouldn't take anyone 5 hours to install, so let us know what you think would be a good way to go about this (remember to use "reply to all" so it goes to all the developers and not just me.) You're not the type to read README files, I take it. You need to run "make" on the host you installed phpix to. If you don't have a shell account, you can't do this. Fortunately, there is an alternate (manual) installation method for your case. Read the README and INSTALL files for this method. Neale |

Yes, I think so. Perhaps what's needed is to rename the package again, to something without PHPix in the name. Incidentally, I'm just putting the finishing touches on a completely new HTML photo album package. I wrote as a Makefile and two awk scripts. I'll let this list know about it when I've put the finishing touches on it, it may be possible to borrow some tricks for use in PHPix2. Neale |

Ah, you got Robert Holak's 2.0.2. The PHPix2 you were using before was a forked version from phpix2.sourceforge.net, which I had hacked up a year ago. I wanted to merge it with Robert's but he seemed dead to the world so I started up a phpix2 project. Later on, Robert released a 2.0 version of his original software and then dropped off the globe again. It's sort of confusing, but what you want is from phpix2.sourceforge.net, not phpix.sourceforge.net. > What should I set it to? same as $pix_base? > Or do I indeed have a really old version? > -jav > Bryan Kilian writes: >> I certainly didn't. >> >> He's probably having desc_base issues. >> >> Bryan >> >> On Sat 2001-11-10 (15:04), Neale Pickett wrote: >> > You didn't take out support for __desc.txt files, did you? Hi, This is most certainly due to the fact that there is are 2 phpix=20 projects at sourceforge. The original phpix, which is now at version 2.0.2, and the phpix2 project (the one with __desc files) which is at version=20= 2.0.1 Something must be done to clarify this a little bit, don't you think ? Are there any plans to include a feature to upload photos to a commercial printer such as ofoto.com or shutterfly.com? I have a personal need for it. (We have a group that wanted to share photos, but have it closed off to the public). But I'm quite happy with either design. I coded the second form because it fits in with the way the rest of the config overrides work. Also, if you wish to use your own auth, you can just set $use_auth to 0 in config.inc, and provide your own. It won't be able to auth a particular album though, since the scripts get run from a single dir. you'd have to auth the whole thing, or not at all. I was also thinking of providing a "login" link that logs you in, and if you're not logged in, PHPix doesn't even _show_ albums you're not allowed access to. This would only work well with type 1 auth. Type 2 would require a tree traversal and that might slow us down a little. Oh, while I was at it, I got tired of the copying index.php around, so I modified it to display what dfl_index.php used to display if config.inc is not found. This allowed me to delete album.php and dfl_index.php and still have the full functionality of the default install. (Also makes it much easier when checking things into CVS.) For some reason, I've just been having the urge to code recently :-) Bryan perl -e 'map{print(pack(V,exp("21.$_")))}(21512211,40167979,2548395575,2745918245)' |

But I can't really say what's the best way to do this, since I wouldn't have a personal need for it. I would imagine, though, that more folks would want to use the server for authentication than phpix itself, since that allows you to have a unified auth scheme for all your stuff: html, phpix, and whatever else you happen to run. Well, let's have a quick discussion: How would we like password protection to work? There are two ways I can think of which seem to fit nicely: a) single file with username:password:album1,album2,album3 Pro: Single file Easy to modify and add new albums for a user. Cons: Allow based password protection, ie, deny all but the albums you specify. Could get nasty with lots of albums. - suggestion, make a * and -album1, although this would require more parsing, it would allow you to do something like: username:password:*,-album1,-album2 What do you do about nested albums? (album1/album2)? requires special file handling to create the password file. b) .htpasswd files in each album you want protected, as well as a master .htpasswd in the script dir. Pro: * Simple design. * Files can be created with the htpasswd util distributed with apache. * deny based. If you want to allow access to an album you don't put a .htpasswd in the dir (and also don't have the master one) * works well with nested albums. (searches down the tree for a password file) * Works the same way as the current config override system. Cons: * Multiple files. * Slightly more work to upkeep, although good design of the album heirarchy could minimise that. * Might have to have the same password file in multiple locations. - Could be solved with soft links * Can't have a master password file without closing all the album dirs. Any thoughts? I currently have a working version of type 2, take a look at http://wuzzle.org/photos/new/phpix You should be able to view the main page fine, and CVS, but if you try view Sample Album, it should prompt you for a user/pass. user: test pass: ook I can modify it for type a) pretty easily. or possibly a hybrid. Now that the framework is in, the way we want to apply it is easily changed.
