What's the best way to get patches reviewed by someone w/ cvs access? I've got a small patch that changes the month/year in the title of the various calendars to be links that display that month year, and I've got a few more minor tweaks/improvements that I'd like to contribute back. Should I mail the list w/ the patch? Add it to the patch-tracker thing on sf? dave |

With troubleshooting help from Ron Conner, I have made some corrections to search.tpl and template.php to improve the search function. Now it looks to us like it gives similar returns, including exceptions, as version 1.1 did. However, for some reason I'm having trouble committing these to the CVS. Could someone else put them up? The change to search.tpl is trivial, there was an "on" that should have been an "off" for the exception descriptions. The changes to template.php are more substantial, but are confined to the draw->search function added to the last version. Jim |

I just uploaded revised versions of template.php and print.php to the CVS The new template.php implements handling of the exceptions to repeated events returned by a search, and fixes a warning that was thrown when a search came up empty. The latter was a problem for people sending warnings to the screen, but this should also help get rid of an unnecessary warning in the error logs. The new print.php fixes a bug to allow returning from a printview to calendar views. Jim Hu |

I have my own webserver and don't need hosting, but thanks. If I wasn't strapped to work 6 days a week, I would have had the time to clean it back up. I got this e-mail because this guy saw my name on the dev list... I don't know why he picked me to e-mail. Anyways, he offered to host the web site for PHPiCalendar on his servers, in order to help get it going again, rather than waiting for the current server to be checked to make sure it's clean. Chad or whoever is making these sorts of decisions (Jim?), you can just respond to him directly. OK, that was easier than I thought. I've committed updates to day.php, week.php, and month.php to enable the search box, and added a template called search_box.tpl. Didn't have to modify template.php at all! Once again, if you want to try it: http://dimer.tamu.edu/phpicalendar-2.0a/week.php? cal=all_calendars_combined971&cpath=seminars&getdate=20050413 Jim Hu |

I recently uploaded a semi-functional version of search.php to the CVS, but it wasn't set up to actually show in the calendars. Looking at the code, it looks like Chad had already left hooks in the appropriate places to get it to work. I have it working at: http://dimer.tamu.edu/phpicalendar-2.0a/week.php? cal=all_calendars_combined971&cpath=seminars&getdate=20050413 Try searching for "protein". However, I'm not sure if the way I did it fits with Chad's original vision. The first step clearly does, which is to replace 'show_search' => '' , with 'show_search' => $show_search, in day.php, week.php, and month.php The part I'm less sure about is that I added the following to template.php $search_box .= ''."\n". ''."\n". ''."\n". ''."\n". ''."\n". ''."\n". ''; $this->page = str_replace('{SEARCH_BOX}', $search_box, $this->page); This was placed in function output() near the end (I put it just before the timestamps are generated). Is that a reasonable place to put things? This form HTML was lifted from the original search.php. It seems to me that this HTML code should be in a separate file to make customization easier...but I'm not sure where or how to do that...I'm guessing it would be in the page->replace_files block, but it would have to come after the sidebar. Please advise, and I'll get this into the CVS when it's the way people want. Jim Hu |

Is such a thing possible? "CVS also ignores file permissions and ownerships, leaving such issues to be resolved by the developer at installation time... Files also lose their ownerships and permissions during repository transactions... If the configuration variable PreservePermissions (see section The CVSROOT/config configuration file) is set in the repository, CVS will save the following file characteristics in the repository..." ( http://www.thathost.com/wincvs-howto/cvsdoc/cvs_15.html ). That variable isn't set in that file... Can't you just change the permissions in a local copy, then package it up? Hi Chad, Sorry I think there is a bit of confusion, all I am suggesting is that the main day/week/month views pass the UID through in the hidden form along with the other bits of data such as the name/location etc. This wouldn't impact on the way the system works at present, but would allow people to simple edit event.php. if they then wanted to make additions to the system. The way EGS works at the moment is that we store all events in a database and then pull out the data into an ical file whenever their is an update. Our ical files we create use the DB key in the UID so if the UID was passed to event.php we could then link from their to our edit page if people are allowed to edit an event - thereby seperating our code from yours and allowing us to track you more closely. I hope this makes sense, if you like I can send you a login off list to our dev version so you can see exactly what I mean about editing events. Thanks Jake > > That said, I have only looked briefly at the sourceforge page for EGS, > so I'm not sure what you are doing exactly, but it seems to me that if > your events are in files that follow the iCalendar standard, then you > should be able to use phpicalendar with minimal modifications. Chad. the head guy, but here's my take - editing the events is something that people often ask for. However, since phpicalendar is designed to display/share events edited by users on their desktops using calendars like Apple's iCal, Mozilla calendar, etc, this creates a problem with synchronizing the calendar back to the calendar owner. So I'd be opposed to including it in the main distribution unless it could either solve this problem, or make it optional somehow. This would only be useful to me if it could be done in a way that retained a user's ability to subscribe to the calendars using iCal or its equivalent. That said, I have only looked briefly at the sourceforge page for EGS, so I'm not sure what you are doing exactly, but it seems to me that if your events are in files that follow the iCalendar standard, then you should be able to use phpicalendar with minimal modifications. I can imagine an alternative method where you would use a database-driven script to manipulate the cached master arrays directly...I think that's what phpMyCal does (http://dev.neb.net/phpMyCal/). In that case, I think you could make your changes by bypassing the parser. This would have the advantage of being faster - I think parsing is the slow step in getting a display. IMHO, event.php wouldn't be the place to work - that only handles the popup event boxes. A number of users have also asked for the ability to display only subsets of calendars. This could be done (I've been meaning to take a crack at it, but haven't had time) by a variety of methods, but the slow step is parsing again. The master array has to be regenerated for every combination of calendars used, which eliminates the advantage provided by caching the master array...so it would either be slow, or the server gets filled with massive numbers of cache files. This would still be worth it for some users. Hi, I am the lead developer of EGS, another web-based project hosted on sourceforge, we have had phpicalendar integrated into our system for some time now. Users can add/edit/delete events etc using phpicalendar as the base to display them. However to do this we had to do some fairly major changes to the code to put in the links to allow editing etc and as a result it makes keeping in sync with phpicalendar a bit of a mission. We were wondering if it would be possible to pass the UID of each event through to the event.php script so that we can then keep all of our modifications in this script alone and use the UID to update everything. If we coded this change would it be likely to be included in the main distribution? Also has anyone thought about changing the calendar select box to a multiple select so that you could make a select of several calendars to view, i.e more than one but not all or one? Thanks Jake |

With all the other features I had left off search until a later release, but if you coded it up thats great! I'm still busy with 12 hour days at work this month but May looks like I'll have some free time. Hopefully I'll close out a few bugs and release 2.0. And get the site back up. :-) I'd say code the search box to always be present in the views, and leave off the config option. I'm not sure where it would go in month view... Will have to think about it. I just uploaded a version of search.php to the CVS that seems to work (mostly...I didn't get exceptions working, and I'm not sure that I tested the booleans thoroughly). It requires a new function in template.php, which I also just uploaded. I haven't modified the other views to include a link to the search function, however. How should this be implemented? Any thoughts? Chad, I assume you had plans for this. Jim Hu |

But having a quick Google on this, http://www.w3.org/2002/12/cal/rfc2445.html looks like the specification. Do we know if anyone has yet written a tool to convert an iCalendar file to this format? Is this a useful direction for phpicalendar to go in - there are a lot of good reasons for it like syndication and integration with other data etc. To me it looks like a bit of a mammoth task, but workable. tola P.S. This problem may trace back to ical_parser.php ? I'm not sure. Argh, how do I get my line breaks back in the description field? They disappear somewhere around the rss.php stage I think. Can anyone help? Oh and if you're trying to use mapgierss on a php version earlier than 4.2.0 then you'll need to download pear's PHP_Compat to get the array_cahnge_key_case() function to include in your script. A couple of comments: First, I think that a UNIX timestamp or some other form that includes as much information as possible should be sent in the RSS. That way, people can decide for themselves how to display the date and/or time. Having it automatically inserted in the title in a particular format (Jim's solution) or even just displayed in a format that doesn't include the year (Ben's) makes it more awkward to format it yourself. I think it's probably trivial to reformat it with date() and strtotime(), but one way or another we should pick a date format and stick to it, so code doesn't have to be rewritten each time. Second, I tried to send a comment about this earlier, but my e-mails from a non-subscribed address haven't (I don't think) been approved yet: the last time I checked, if you set up a 'daysfrom' RSS feed using Jim's solution that spans less than 100 days, it won't work properly when it reaches the end of the month. This is because dates in PHPiCalendar seem to rely on being in a format that makes months 100 days. I can't figure out how to get the information about how long a given month actually is. Anyways, Jim may have fixed this with a change he made earlier this week, but I haven't tested it yet. Thanks for working on this; it's a great addition to PHPiCalendar. Jim Hu wrote: > I added those fields because the ones in the release didn't have some > information I wanted. Right, I've hacked around with your version of rss.php and it's now generating yet another different XML document, where an item looks like:
<uid>5E2CE264-8A5F-11D9-AC32-000D936C280E-RID</uid>
recurring event

with description
<calname>exhibitions</calname> <starttime>6:45 PM</starttime> <endtime>7:45 PM</endtime> <startdate>March 2</startdate> <enddate>March 5</enddate>
Where end date is the end date of a recurring event, UID is grabbed for each item from the array key and other fields are hacked around a little for my needs. It's a bit of a pain that the iCal parser doesn't include a year in the $master_array["recur"]["UNTIL"] - wouldn't it be better to use a UNIX time or "20050302" consistently for everything? In fact, why doesn't it break when you have a recurring event covering several years? > I uploaded my version to provide the date range capability, and to > show how this could be used to have a single code block generate the > feed, instead of different ones for day, week, and month. OK, that should be good. But assuming I get that working, I have one more problem. rss.php generates an XML
for every occurence of a recurring event. I only want one
which states the start date and end date for an event. > As modified by me, the rss feed does not conform to an RDF calendar > specification where the tag names are registered and so on. I also tried to look for an RDF calendar specification, got thoroughly confused and gave up and just did my own XML setup. Anyone want to do this? > Hope this helps... Yes, thank you. It does seem a little odd changing from .ics to an array to XML, back to an array but it works! seminartitle and host are fields defined in the most recent version of the rss.php in the CVS, which I had customized after the last release version. I added those fields because the ones in the release didn't have some information I wanted. I probably should have removed them or named them something more general before posting it (Sorry, Chad!)...I uploaded my version to provide the date range capability, and to show how this could be used to have a single code block generate the feed, instead of different ones for day, week, and month. To use magpie with the older rss.php, the fields are: title link description rss.php takes the fields defined in the master array and tags them to conform to the RSS format well enough for magpie or other parsers to parse...I like magpie because a) it is used by another package I use and b) it's pretty simple and forgiving. As modified by me, the rss feed does not conform to an RDF calendar specification where the tag names are registered and so on. When I tried to read about calendar rss specifications, it seemed like the standards were not well defined at the time (about 9 months ago?)...and/or it was too confused for an amateur like me to understand! You can see these by looking at the rss feed you get as text (just paste the URL in your browser and view source). It's XML, so there are tags surrounding the data for each item. Each event looks something like:
<tag1>data</tag1> <tag2>data</tag2> etc.
And there are tags surrounding the whole feed. Hope this helps...and anyone out there who understands RDF better should suggest how to make things compliant! I did that patch in the most recent CVS. cpath is a parameter added to several of the files in the CVS...it lets you keep calendars in different subdirectories, and it's unrelated to the patch for date ranges. I think I need to figure out how to handle that - probably the code should test for whether cpath is defined and only add to the $_GET vars passed if it is. I guess I missed it because I never use the links. You should be able to just edit out the &cpath= in line 133. Jim Hu p.s. Here's an example of how I use phpicalendar and magpie to generate a page with a range of events...it's why I did the patch in the first place. Running MagpieRSS, I noticed that the 'link' parameters don't seem to work. They come out ending with cpath= , rather than pointing to a particular event. Is that a problem with something on my end, or with PHPiCalendar? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the purpose of the link parameter.
