I am a netadmin with mostly a background in wan/lan hardware infrastructure. I am a newbie to programming in php/perl/mysql, but I have recently decided to learn :)
anyways I am trying to ad some additional features, such as :
a homepage for each technician that displays that tech's open calls
a daily progress log for each tech (this is to give the admin an idea of the status of long term projects)
an admin overview page - this displays all open calls and the most recent logs of each tech
I don't know if anyone else needs features like this, does anyone have any suggestions for me ? Like I said I am a newbie so this may take some time for me to learn and write. I am really interested in helping out this project. So far phphelpdesk is working great for me :)

I think those are good features to have.
In terms of learning the best is to get some books. I have a PHP book home that I will send you the info.
It may also be a good idea to get some Javascript and HTML books. I have another book I could also recommend for this.
In general it is a good idea if you go to a big library and look through some books so you find one at your level.
If you are starting to program you want something to do more "tutorial" like type of things. As you progress you want books that serve better as reference.

Re-reading your note I noticed you mentioned the progress bar feature. Although it certainly could be of use for some people I am not sure that a "help desk" application is the type of place for this. After all helpdesk is all about loggin problems and trying to get them solved ASAP. I don't think that tracking progress of a problem is too usefull.
To me task tracking is more of a project management type of task than a helpdesk.

Your right, progress tracking is more project management than a true help desk. My IT staff is rather small, and of course i want/need a program that will "do it all". That is the reason i was looking for such a feature.
Thanks for the advice on learning php. I know javascript/html already (not saying i am a master). What is the name of that book ? so far i have been doing on-line tutorials, taking scripts and changing things round to see what does what. i am learning but have a ways to go. I hope soon i will be able to offer more help to this project.

I have two PHP books, but one is just sitting on a corner gathering dust. :-(

I like their hands on approach. They also have code sample for pretty much every topic been discussed.
I am somewhat starting to program PHP myself, but hopefully I should get up to speed quickly.
I also have a consultant that does PHP work for me so if we get stuck and can't get help on the lists I can ask him.

You will probably want phpGroupWare, and its port of phpHelpdesk as its own Trouble Ticket module.

Currently the module is under massive re-write, but keep an eye on phpGroupWare. We are building a sweet package with alot of function.
