My advice is upgrade. My reasons are very simple.
1. Security
2. Don't stay behind

What I mean with point 2 is. The longer you keep using an older php version, the more problems you can expect in the future. I run PHP 4.3.4 here and it is also very stable.

The effort will make it worthwhile.
