OK I presume YOU uploaded PGV to one.com? If your hosting company is providing everything else then it's likely to be Apache with PHP and MySQL.
I presume you can browse the phpgedview directory on-line? I'd be tempted simply to copy everything to the 'root' directory, the same one you are seeing 'phpgedview' in and then you will have the index.php at the website.co.uk level …
I can't remember if there are settings that will need changing - hopefully someone else will fill in that gap - I'm using my own port of the original code base.

Some hosting providers allow specification of the web root on a control panel. You could just tell the server to serve from ~/phpgedview/ if one.com has this feature.

As long as you're not running with the media firewall enabled, you can just copy everything as you have proposed to do. However, the "config.php" file may need to be edited to empty the $SERVER_URL field.
I would take this opportunity to upgrade the installation to the "SVN" version.
Follow the download and install instructions in the recent Help topic post whose title begins with "Repost: Download …". Adjust the upgrade instructions to account for the new directory where you want to have PGV. You may still need to edit the existing (and now relocated) "config.php" file as mentioned above.

To run PGV as the only program from that site, George's suggestion is the best, IMO, as there is little reason to muck up your root with programs. You may change your mind later and decide to put your domain to multiple uses.
You should also use c-names to create some short pointers to any other programs you might run,
i.e. pgv.bill-lancaster.co.uk and blog.bill-lancaster.co.uk and etc. Then create an index page for the main site and have your programs linked. This would be a normal installation on a multi-offering website rather than a single purpose.
Finally, Gerry's suggestion on using SVN rather than any previous release is important. SVN contains a number of bug fixes to prior releases, although it too is long in the tooth, but very stable. -Stephen

Stephen, I can see the wisdom of your comments and have now created s simple introductory page in root leaving pgv where it was. I knew I had a problem with my multimedia in pgv so have moved on to fixing that first. I've just created a new pgv on another website and imported my gedcom - no problems. So in parallel with fixing my original pgv, I'll try importing pgv to webtrees.
Thanks again,
Bill

My pgv files arel located in a folder /phpgedview
This requires visitors to go to www.website.co.uk/phpgedview
How can I change this so that just "www.website.co.uk" will bring up my pgv?
I have noted that the "Site Configuration/PhpGedView URL" page says "You should only change this setting if you are sure you know what you are doing"
Clearly I don't qualify so any halp would be welcome!
Bill
Are you running it on 'Apache' ?
Does anything else get surved up from the same machine?
Lester, sorry, don't know how to answer you question - my pgv is on my own website hosted by one.com and is the only thing running on it.
