Hi Everyone,
I have a couple of sources that refer to Web sites and would like to be able to open them within PhpGedView (V4.2.3) but I can't work out how.
From "Add a new Media item" I put the url inthe "File name on server" field as indicated, I also added a Title but nothing I tried would give a clickable link.
Do I have to input the URL in a special format or something. Anyone know how to do this??
Glen

First, this is the second time you have posted a HELP question in the open discussion forum. Please, when you need help, use that forum for your request.
Secondly, there are several threads under HELP that would have answered this question, had you searched. These threads arre maintained by SourceForge and PGV to serve as a researchable asset and should be used prior to asking a new question.
That said, you can't have a remotely hosted media item in your local server media configuration. If so, you'd be pulling the item from the remote server, using its bandwidth to present your media. It terms of web etiquette, this is a big NO-NO. Also, you could possibly liable for potential copyright infringements. It is for these reasons and more that PGV does not allow this kind of remote linkage.

1/ Sorry to the Group for my failour to properly understand how this discussion area worked. I was thinking "Open Discussion" was an action where as it is in fact the folder name, sorry. I future I will try to post to the correct place.
2/ I searched the areas here for some time before sending a message but didn't come across anything to help me.
3/ I don't follow your point here? Under in the field "File name on server" the comment says
"Do not change to keep original file name." / "You may enter a URL, beginning with «http://»."
It is this URL I am trying to learn how to use to link to media on my other web site but nothing seams to work. Is this note incorrect? Glen

Yes, you should be able to do it, but remember to obtain permission from the remote site owner before you serve media from their server on your site. It may well be a violation of law and a copyright issue.

I have just tested this action in 4.2.2 and 4.2.3+, and both work as expected.
From Album tab > Add a New Media Object > GUI pop-up > Field: File Name on Server
I enter a web-accessable image: http://onlytoys.com/prodimages/full/darda/11189.jpg
I answer the Format question as jpeg
I select type as defaulted: Photo
I enter a title: Test image for Create-A-Course race set from OnlyTOYS.com
I select NO for Highlight Image setting
I click SAVE, and the page refreshes and the thumbnail image of this item appears amongst my other images. I can select an option from the title to View or Edit or I can click on the thumbnail and the larger image is served.
It appears to be operating exactly as it should.

Hi Stephen, Thanks for your help.
I followed your instructions to the letter but it still doesn't work.
I get no Icon other then the default Icon and when I click on the icon I get a popup box saying "ClearBox ERROR: // Could not open Image : " Yet if I cick on your link above I can see the picture ok.
If I click on the "Title" from the Media tab (but not from Album Tab) it shows the media item details M599 in this case and on the left it shows the picture but with the words "File not found. "(in BOLD RED) , this is as close as I get to seeing the picture. Tried it with other on-line JPG images too but get the same result. I am running V4.2.3 but not the plus version I don't think. Could this be the reason for the difference? you can see my attempts yourself at:- http://wilson-mciver.com/individual.php?pid=I6318&ged=GGW1.GED&show_changes=yes
under the media tab.
Thanks again for your help,

As I said, I tested my 4.2.2 and 4.2.3+ installations. I don't have the 4.2.3 stable release installed as it would be duplicative AFAIAC. As to whether changes were made, I'd prefer not going through all the SVN changes to see if something was fixed and there is no note in the changes log. All I can say, and you can see for yourself, is that it works exactly as designed.

Obviously, my URL redirection is correct and serves the image. Your URL is incorrect, as you did not load the image into your media folder. Something strange in your configuration or the URL you entered.

Stephen,
Thanks again.
I have just found the answer to this problem. It was a configuration setting as you suggested.
From > Multimedia tab > General tab >
Keep links {This was set to "NO" changing it to "YES" has restored it to proper operation},
I am not sure where you would need this set to "NO" but guess I must have altered it at some stage while I was setting things up. Thanks for all your help, it now works like it should. Thanks again, Glen

Thanks for posting the explanation of the "mis-configuration' of your gedcom media settings, if you wish to use external links. This will be helpful to others with a similar problem. I assured you that it was something simple, since it worked correctly on our sites.
I am deleting mine from my active site as this is my permanent gedcom, so the above links within PGV will go dead.

My stupid question, but did you approve the changes?
I've just done it again, exactly as described, on my 3xGGF which would be public.

Are you using MediaFireWall? If not, the clearbox error is probably part of a known bug. If so, it should be working.
Stephen
Glen
Also, something is wrong with your entry or your setup.
Go to the Album tab on your INDI:
http://wilson-mciver.com/individual.php?pid=I6318&ged=GGW1.GED&tab=8
Roll over your added media item - create a course and look at the URL link in the URL preview (Firefox footer). You'll see:
http://wilson-mciver.com/media/11189.jpg
Now navigate to my site and do the same thing. The URL preview is not on my local server as it is a remote site URL, and see:
http://onlytoys.com/prodimages/full/darda/11189.jpg
Obviously, my URL redirection is correct and serves the image. Your URL is incorrect, as you did not load the image into your media folder. Something strange in your configuration or the URL you entered.
